Description of the walk

Access: From the Col du Lautaret road (D1091), near Villar-d'Arène, take the D307 road leading to the hamlet of Les Cours. Continue until you reach the first car park, which is not marked on the IGN 1:25,000 map and is located just before the main car park (barrier).

(S/E) From the first car park, drive up to the second car park. At the barrier, take the track leading to Lac du Pontet.

(1) At the warning and emergency sign, turn left onto the path which climbs slightly at first, then follows a contour line to reach the ridge of Puy Golèfre. Descend on the left to Col de l'Aiguillon (2059m).

(2) Turn right onto the path and follow it to the hamlet of Entraigues (car park).

(3) From this car park, turn right for a 1½-hour climb that stretches out ahead of you along the Le Maurian torrent.

(4) Turn left towards the Refuge du Goélon.

(5) From the refuge, a path behind it leads you to Serret des Morts. Shortly afterwards, you will be overlooking a page of history written over the last few decades.

(6) Continue climbing to reach the end of the outward leg of this hike near the old Refuge Carraud at an altitude of 2,480 metres.

(7) Return via the same path to Serret des Morts.

(6) Reach the lake shore. A trail allows you to rejoin the ascent route without passing by the refuge.

(4) Begin the descent to return to the hamlet of Entraigues.

(3) Climb back up to the Col de l'Aiguillon.

(2) From the pass, do not go up to the left (unless you want to go back to the lake), but continue left on the path marked "Lac du Pontet". This sign is misleading, as you will have to go through the car parks to eventually reach the lake...

(8) Junction with a track to take on the left to reach the car park after about 6½ hours of walking, excluding stops (S/E).

Notes

There are no particular technical difficulties. All you need is good footwear and a good supply of water, as the only source of water is the mountain streams. This is a risky solution that I do not recommend.
In summer, there is a refreshment bar at Lac du Pontet.

This hike can be shortened by starting from the Entraigues car park, which can be reached from La Grave via the D33 and then the D333. It can be extended by starting from Villar-d'Arène via a path leading to the first car park.

Worth a visit

You will want to stop many times, both on the way there and on the way back, to admire the sumptuous landscape that unfolds before you, depending on the light of the day, with the entire La Meije massif, the grand peak at 3,983m, the eastern peak at 3,891m, Le Rateau further to the right at 3,809 m, and what remains (take it from an old-timer) of the Tabuchet, Meije, and Rateau glaciers.

As you head towards the old Carraud refuge, the Aigulles d'Arves will impose themselves on you. And then, the Aiguille du Goléon (3,427m), on your left, which can be a destination with a night at the refuge. But you will need to be equipped (crampons, ice axe, rope) to tackle the Lombard Glacier.

Heading towards the old Carraud refuge, you will overlook a vast, almost flat area between the Serret des Morts and the Amont plateau, where you will be surprised by the page of writing written over time by people passing through like you and me. This site, recognised by Natura 2000, must be respected. Do not touch anything, even if you feel like leaving your mark.

It's a very beautiful hike, but there isn't much forest nearby, so be sure to bring sun protection and possibly set off early (that's what I did 😜). The two lakes (Pontet and Goleon) are very nice, and the valley after Goleon is very bucolic... There were two very beautiful and very gentle sheepdogs and a flock of sheep, one of which had given birth to a lamb the day before. The lamb was struggling to keep up with its mother, which was funny because they were talking to each other non-stop!

A very beautiful walk, I was already familiar with the Pontet and Aiguillon lake section, which is magnificent. The climb up to the lake is worth the effort, the slope is gentle at first but the end... we saw people there all day long – not huge crowds, but always a few. In summer, Pontet Lake is very pleasant for swimming on the way back, and many people were enjoying it without feeling cold!
At Lac du Goléon, everyone has fun writing their names with pebbles in the marsh. It's impressive and amusing, but a poorly positioned sign asks people to stop doing this to protect certain plants that are affected. Too late, I only saw it afterwards...

A magnificent hike, the Goléon Lake site is splendid with views of La Meije and the Aiguilles d'Arves. The climb is a bit tough and leaves little room for rest, but what a pleasure it is to pass the lock and discover this pure panorama.

A somewhat long but magnificent hike. The climb to the lake is a bit steep, but the effort is rewarded by a beautiful view and a magnificent lake.

A very pleasant walk that starts in the alpine meadows and ends, from the hamlet of Entraigues, with a climb that leaves no respite but is rewarded by the splendid Lac du Goléon, in which La Meije is reflected. In summer, the refuge offers drinks and pies.
From the hamlet car park, the trail is very busy. It is best to set off directly from there and early in the morning if you want some peace and quiet.
After the last house in the hamlet, at the Y-junction, turn right towards the stream as indicated in the guidebook (several of us took the wrong turn, but I was able to spot three deer before turning back).
Many thanks to 01rando for this beautiful walk :-)

A slight variation is to start from the village of Les Hières (take the small road on the right after the tunnel when coming from La Grave).

There was a lot of snow at the lake on 30/05/19. It was possible to walk around very early in the morning, but after that it was better to put on snowshoes.
