Description of the walk

Access: Leave the RD1091 at Villar-d'Arêne (before the village when coming from Briançon) and take the D207 on the left leading to the Pont d'Arsine and the large car park next to it. Park in this car park.

(S/E) Take the red and white marked trail on the left of the wide track, which follows theGR®54,GR® du Tour de l'Oisans. Continue to the second car park.

(1) Continue on theGR®, begin the climb up Pas d'Anna Falque, and at a bend, join a crossroads of trails at a place called Les Voutes. Continue on theGR® until, after a series of hairpin bends, you reach the Combes crossroads.

(2) Take the path on the right that approaches the Romanche and, via a series of hairpin bends, reach the water intake in the large valley of Plan de l'Alpe.

(3) Stay on this well-marked, almost horizontal trail until you reach a new crossroads at the Torrent du Rif de Chamoissière.

(4) Continue along the path on the right and you will soon reach the Pont de Valfourche crossroads, another important junction.

(5) Turn left and follow the signs for Refuge Adèle Planchard (the path on the right leads to Refuge du Pavé). Continue along this path and climb quickly up an excellent path through the scree to easily reach the viewpoint of the source of the Romanche.

(6) Begin the return journey by following the outward route to the Rif de Chamoissière crossroads.

(4) Take the path on the right, which climbs briefly to the Refuge de Villar-d'Arêne.

(7) Continue along a path parallel tothe GR®54until you reach the crossroads just before the weather station.

(8) Stay on theGR®, begin the descent to reach the junction of the loop.

(2) Follow the outward route back to the car park (S/E).

Alone in the world during this hike that we had wanted to do for quite some time.

Apart from the length and the elevation gain at the very beginning of the hike, it is still fairly easy.
We didn't go back up to the Refuge de l'Alpe on the way back, seeing no point in doing so other than to take in the view of this pretty valley, but we had already done that in the summer of 2022.

As a bonus, we had beautiful autumn sunshine and met four or five people in this remote area with its solitary, flamboyant larch trees.

A pure delight.

A magnificent glacial valley along the Romanche River, with the first signs of autumn and flamboyant larch trees. The climb takes 2½ hours and could be rated "moderate", with no difficulty (however, access to the Adèle Planchard refuge cannot be improvised...). In the morning, a few hikers were coming down from the refuges (unmanned at this time of year), and there were few people out on this beautiful day. It's time to enjoy it!

A very beautiful hike! The climb is in two parts, with a fairly flat valley in between. The scenery is stunning, and glaciers come into view once you reach the springs. On the way back up to the refuge, you will encounter marmots and herds of cows.

Truly breathtaking landscapes – it's no surprise that this place is known as the Tibet of the Ecrins!

This route is not very busy in June. Return to the refuge side to see marmots.

One of the most beautiful and challenging walks in the Embrun Valley, with magnificent views of marmots and chamois. 16 km in total, no one else on the trail

Hello everyone,
Thank you very much for this route.
Any recommended places to camp along this route (apart from pushing on to the Adèle Planchard refuge )?
With sunrise or sunset, if possible
Enjoy the walk, everyone!

This route offers several panoramic views, sometimes in the woods and sometimes on plateaus, and is very pleasant. It does not present any particular difficulties other than its length. We had fairly good weather and were able to complete the walk within the estimated time despite frequent stops to take photos. I recommend this beautiful, well-marked autumn hike.

A magnificent outing. After an initial climb, most of the hike takes place in a vast glacial valley that follows the course of the Romanche River for a final ascent to the glacier. A spectacular landscape where you can get quite close to marmots. The classification as difficult seems excessive, except for the number of kilometres.

we take this splendid walk almost every summer... but this time, the flood that destroyed La Bérarde at the end of June also left incredible scars on the river: the path has been washed away in places, and ecosystems have been destroyed here and there... it's saddening.

But the incredible charm of this valley remains nonetheless

Excellent hike in August, so there were lots of people on the trail.
We passed through some magnificent landscapes and had a few seconds alone with a marmot.
A hike to recommend!

A magnificent hike along the Romanche, which is definitely worth the effort.

However, it is advisable to return to point number 2
The path that branches off to the right is now blocked by stones and a sign warning of erosion.
It is best to continue on the GR for a few hundred metres along the hairpin bends until you reach another fork, this time indicated by a sign, which leads to a much better established and maintained path that rejoins the original route.
