The start of this hike is at Gasthaus Zur Schnecke in Kandern.
(S) From Gasthaus Zur Schnecke, return to Hauptstrassse. Head east to rejoin the "Schwarzwald Westweg", marked by a large sign on the left
Signposting: Schwarzwald Westweg (Westliche variante), red diamonds
(1) From Ochsengasse, start on the Westweg. Cross the north of the village and look for a sign with a red diamond pointing towards Belchen.
(2) Turn right onto the Westweg and follow the signs to Sausenber Schloss. Take the stairs to reach the castle ruins.
(3) Enjoy the view before heading back down to Westweg. Continue north, following the signs for Belchen.
(4) At the Hexenplatz crossroads, turn left onto Westweg, which narrows. Walk through the forest, heading north, and you will see another sign for Belchen.
(5) Continue straight ahead, continuing the climb to the highest point of the day, the Blauen. Please note: when you arrive at the Blauen, the Westweg normally passes between the two buildings. This passage is blocked during work on the second building. You will therefore need to take a makeshift path to go around the first building and climb up to the car park.
(6) From the car park, head towards the telecommunications installations and the antenna on top of the Blauen. Look for a sign for Belchen and the Westweg trail markers.
(7) Follow the access road to Blauen and look for a sign for Belchen at the hairpin bend.
(8) Begin the descent along a beautiful forest track. Go around the small peak of Stockberg and pay attention when the direction changes to north-east.
(9) Take the path that descends to the right. Please note: there are no signposts, just a red diamond on a tree. You will arrive at a crossroads. Cross the road carefully and look for a signpost.
(10) From Egerten, continue along the track heading north. Look for a path that branches off to the right after about 50 metres (red diamond).
(11) Leave the track, take the path on the left and follow the Westweg until you reach another crossroads. Continue until you see the hut (Stühlehütte).
(12) At the Stühlehütte, take advantage of the benches and table to take a break. Head east, pass the hut and take the path on the left. Stay on the Westweg until you reach a new sign for Belchen.
(13) As indicated by the Belchen sign, turn left. Continue until you reach a fork.
(14) Take the middle path. Continue and cross a road at Kreuzweg.
(15) Cross the road and rejoin the Westweg, picking up this road again at a hairpin bend.
(16) Cut across the bend, follow the road for about 50 metres and rejoin the Westweg, which crosses a pasture to the Gasthaus Haldenhof, your accommodation for the night. (E)
