Description of the walk

Car park: Saint-Johannis Breite on the L132 road. Coming from Obereggen towards Sitzenkirch, car park on the right-hand side of the road at the end of an uphill stretch, near a bus stop.

(S/E) From the car park, take the small asphalt road (no traffic) heading east towards Egertle. It crosses a meadow horizontally, marked with yellow diamond signs. This road is called Enzenbergweg (signposted on a very worn wooden sign). Do not take the path going up to the left of a bench (Steineckweg) or the Panoramaweg heading towards Obereggenen. About 500 m further on, ignore a path branching off to the right into the forest and continue along the asphalt road to a fork in the road at a place called Egertle.

(1) Leave the small road on the left going downhill (Enzenbergweg) and take a path branching off to the right towards Kandern (Feuerbacher Holzweg). At the entrance to the forest, ignore a path to the right. About 50 metres further on, at Probstwald, leave the wide Feuerbacher Holzweg path towards Gaishalde and take a path branching off at a 90° angle to the left towards Neuenbürg (yellow diamond). After about 800 metres downhill, cross a path coming down from the right and continue along the trail (yellow diamond) to reach a wide path at Neuenberg.

(2) Follow this path on the right towards Palmgarten. A little further down, ignore a path branching off to the left. After 450 metres through the forest and after passing a pasture, don't miss the start of a path at the beginning of a campsite.

(3) Leave the carriageway that continues straight ahead and take this unmarked path downhill to the left. Pass to the right of an electricity pylon. Continue downhill along the small stream. Keep to the left of the campsite and then cross the swimming pool car park. Cross a bridge and climb up the Schwimmbadweg road opposite. Join the main road, Sitzenkircher Strasse, at the entrance to Kandern and follow it downhill to the right for about 400 metres. Take care and use the pavement on the right-hand side of the road.

(4) At the flashing lights, cross the road (be careful) and go up the small street lined with stone walls. About 100 metres further up, turn left. Ignore the two roads on the right. Pass to the right of the Church of St. Franz von Sales and start the steep climb. At the last house, ignore the road turning 90° to the right and continue straight ahead on Franz von Sales Weg, following the red diamond signs. Further up, at a bench on the right and an electricity pylon on the left, enjoy the view of Kandern from the promontory. A few metres further up, at a place called Im Loh, leave the path on the left towards Wässerli. Continue uphill towards Hässlerköpfli on the road marked with a red diamond. You will reach a transformer on the right-hand side of the road.

(5) Just after this, leave the tarmac road opposite and take a small road leading uphill to the right. The climb is marked by the red diamond in a meadow. Just before the end of the tarmac section, leave a path on the right and continue uphill. Go up some steps and continue uphill (red diamond). Leave a path on the left leading to the edge of the forest and join a wide path. Take it to the right (sign for Aussichts - Pavillon) for about 50 metres and you will arrive at Heissbühl.

(6) Turn back and follow the uphill path for 50 metres. At the Aussichts - Pavillon sign, at the junction with the uphill path, continue straight ahead on the wide path leading towards a power line. From the left, you will rejoin the road you left earlier at the transformer. Leave this road going downhill and continue uphill on the gravel path (Mohrensattelweg). After a wide bend to the right, enter the forest and continue uphill at a fairly steep gradient. On a flat section, at a bench, leave a path on the left. (Very beautiful view of Sitzenkirch). Continue on the wide path guided by the red diamond.

(7) Further on, leave the Wässerliweg path on your left, then a few metres further on, at a place called Lange Ebene, ignore the path on the right leading to Kandern Stadt Mitte. Shortly afterwards, leave the Steinenkreuzweg path on your right, then the path on your left (Kanzelweg). Continue straight ahead towards a shelter visible on the left. At the fork, at the shelter, ignore the path leading off to the right and continue uphill. 100 metres after the shelter, turn right onto the Schlossweg path, ignoring the path to the left. Further up, ignore the Burggrabenweg path on the left. Continue uphill and, at a flat section, ignore a path branching off to the left and turn right to climb up to the ruins (Sausenburg sign). There is a superb view from the well-restored tower.

(8) Descend and continue downhill, starting on the left of the steps and passing an old bench. Please note that there are no markings or directions for this part of the downhill trail. At the bottom of the descent, the trail widens and the red diamond reappears. At a table and benches on a flat section, ignore a path coming from the left. Continue through the forest, guided by the red diamond. At two houses at the edge of the forest, leave Sitzenkirch on your left and join the road ahead connecting Vogelbach to Sitzenkirch.

(9) At Lindenbückle (caution), take the road on the left for 250 m downhill towards Klosterhalde. Pass a woodshed on the left. Ignore the path just below this shed. At the entrance to a left-hand bend, find a path on the left towards Interregio - Wanderweg. Take this path (yellow diamond) downhill, which quickly runs alongside a stream. Shortly afterwards, you will come to an intersection with a path that crosses the stream on the right (Laubrainweg).

(10) Leave this path and continue straight ahead on the path marked with a yellow diamond, then a few metres further on, take the path branching off to the right. Descend along the Schnegelbach stream on the Schnegelbachweg path. Before passing a pasture on the right, ignore a path on the left going uphill. Continue downhill (yellow diamond). At the bottom of the valley, cross the Lippisbach stream, cut across a path and take the asphalt road opposite uphill through a pasture. You will arrive on the road connecting Sitzenkirch to Vogelbach.

(11) Caution: turn left for about 20 metres, cross the road and find a path opposite leading up to the forest towards Schloss (on an "old generation" sign). Set off on a steep climb, guided by the yellow diamond. Cross a path. Take it to the left. 300 metres further on, join the Klosterhaldenweg path. Cross it and climb the small hill opposite towards Schlossattel.

(12) At Schlossattel, head towards Schloss Bürgeln on the right. After climbing for 400 metres, you will reach Schloss Bürgeln. There is a superb view from the terrace. Visits are possible (for a fee).

(13) Descend via the same path to return to Schlossattel. Continue straight ahead downhill towards Saint-Johannis Breite on the Schlossweg path. Pass a path on your left. A few metres further on, at a transformer, head south-west, left onto the Rundweg path marked with a yellow diamond, leaving the path on the right. After 250 m on the carriage road, along a pasture, after passing a path on the left uphill, you will come to a left-hand bend. Don't miss the path on the right.

(14) Leave the wide path and take the small path on the right (yellow diamond) which turns left after a few metres. Continue downhill along a small fir tree plantation. Cross a forest path and continue straight ahead. You will come to a wide carriageway which you should take to the right (below the village of Sitzenkirch). On the descent, ignore a path leading off to the right (Steingrubenweg) and continue towards a farm. Cross (with caution) the road connecting Sitzenkirch to Obereggenen and return to the Saint-Johannis Breite car park (S/E).

The departure from the car park towards the walk itself was complicated. The nearby town is undergoing construction work on the main thoroughfare, and obviously for a long time to come. On the other hand, there are some lovely views from Schloss Burgeln and the medieval tower about 30 minutes away. The gradient is very uneven, going up and down all the time. I would advise against this for children who are not teenagers.

Beautiful and varied walk (forest, meadow, orchard, etc.). Impressive view from the tower, even though visibility was reduced by fog, despite the beautiful sunshine. The only disappointment was not being able to go to the castle terrace overlooking the panorama at the end of the castle because there was a wedding. We did, however, make the most of the Vosges panorama under the shade of the trees.

This is a lovely tour with some great views, particularly of the Sausenburg ruin, thanks to the fact that you can climb the tower from the inside with very secure access.
