Between the cliffs and hillsides of the Anglin in Mérigny, Rocher de la Dube

The cliffs of the Anglin Valley, dominated by the Rocher de la Dube near Mérigny, set the scene for this route, which offers views of the limestone plateau and the river as it follows small paths lined with dry stone walls. Near Rives, you will also discover the Grotte du Rocher Saint-Berthomé, another remnant of the former limestone quarry used for the manufacture of sarcophagi, and the mysterious site of the old Moulin de Braud mill.

Description of the walk

The starting point is at the Rocher de la Dube climbing site, between Mérigny and Rives, on the edge of the D50.
Follow the yellow markings of the route proposed by the Brenne Regional Nature Park, entitled: Between the cliffs and hillsides of the Anglin.

(S/E) Join the D50, which passes at the foot of Rocher de la Dube, and follow it carefully north-west for 400 metres. Go up a path on the right, then turn left twice. Further on, leave a path descending to the left and join a small road.

(1) Follow it to the right for 50 metres, then take a farm track on the left. Turn right to climb up to Beauchapeau.

(2) Turn right and immediately follow the road on the left. Continue straight ahead at the next intersection towards La Vieille Grange. Pass a track on the right and cross the hamlet. Continue along this small road to Rives.

(3) Carefully follow the D50 to the right and, just after a bridge, take a carriage road on the left. Pass Rocher St-Berthomé and its cave and go to the end of the road to reach the site of the old Moulin de Braud.

(4) Go up the grassy path on the right that passes in front of a house. It becomes a gravel path in the undergrowth and a carriage road at the edge of the woods as you approach Fournioux.

(5) Carefully follow the D3 to the right, cross the hamlet and continue on the D3 towards Fontgombault for 300 metres.

(6) Take a farm track on the left, then turn right. Carefully cross the D3 to take the small road opposite, towards Coreil.

(7) Follow the track to the right, which turns left further on. Then continue straight ahead on a forest track, leaving the track that veers off to the right.

(8) Be careful because 100 m further on, continue straight ahead south-east along a path not marked on the IGN map (but present on OSM), leaving the previous path turning right. Follow the yellow markings, ignoring the various forest tracks.

(9) Follow the track to the left for 25 metres, then turn right onto a forest track (signposted yellow and blue routes). Continue straight ahead to leave the woods and cross a field. Leave a path on your left and pass under high-voltage power lines, then join the small D95 road at Pertuis au Loup.

(10) Turn right and follow the road carefully for 400 metres. Take a path on the right in line with the high-voltage power line, then, 30 m further on, turn left onto a stony path in the undergrowth which will take you back to the starting point (S/E). You can then climb up to the right for a 300 m round trip to the Rocher de la Dube (caution: steep ascent and descent!).

A hike that we were unable to complete.
We couldn't find the route to the hamlet of Fourniou, so we retraced our steps.
On the other hand, the Anglin valley is beautiful.

A hike that takes place mainly in the countryside, although hikers will have to follow a few tarmac roads. It passes through various fields belonging to farmers and livestock breeders, as is usually the case in the Vienne department. No particular difficulties and a pleasant way to get away from it all.

A beautiful start to the hike along the Anglin. One suggestion for improvement: provide an indication of the distance to be covered before turning left, leaving the GR on the right. We may have turned too early (didn't see the dovecote), but we still arrived at the fence of the Maison du Rocher des Sorciers without any problems. Along the river, about halfway along, there was a fallen tree on the path that we had to climb over.

A beautiful route starting at the magnificent Rocher de la Dube, passing through pretty hamlets. At the end, don't hesitate to make the 300m round trip to the top of the Dube, which is very steep but offers a beautiful view! A little too much road in my opinion, but they are small roads with little traffic. The route is very well marked.

A very pleasant walk that alternates between wooded and rural landscapes.
The route is clearly marked on the app and with yellow markings.
The riverside at the Braud mill is ideal for a short bucolic break.
