Description of the walk

Access: Saint-Chéronstation , on RER line C.

Red and white markings

(S) Exit the station on the side of platform 2 (towards Dourdan to Paris) and the main building. Take Avenue de la Gare, which runs diagonally to the left. Go up and reach Avenue Aristide Briand.

No markings

(1) Optional short detour to Saint-Chéron Church: follow Avenue Aristide Briand to the right. At the end, turn right onto Rue Charles de Gaulle (church on the left).

(2) Take the first alley on the right (Cour du Paradis on the map). Continue along a path between two walls (Ruelle du Paradis). Then turn right onto Ruelle Lamy. Return to Avenue Aristide Briand and follow it to the left for about 20 metres.

Red and white markings

(1) Then take Ruelle de l'Église à Félix (on the right if you have made the detour via Saint-Chéron Church, otherwise straight ahead). Continue along a path that branches off to the right. Join Rue Charles de Gaulle and follow it to the right for about 30 metres.

(3) Climb the steps on the left. Walk past a small cemetery on your right. Join Rue de Rambouillet and follow it to the left for about 50 metres.

(4) Turn right into a small street. Continue straight ahead, climb uphill and pass below the cemetery on the right-hand side. At the top, cross Rue de Rambouillet and continue straight ahead to enter a wood.

(5) Continue straight ahead through the woods, along the edge of the plateau. Allow a path to come in from the right and turn left. Walk west-southwest and pass three paths on the left and two paths on the right. You will arrive at an intersection at the edge of the plateau.

(6) Then turn right. Cross the woods north-northeast, first on flat ground and then downhill.

(7) At the bottom, reach the D132 and follow it to the left. At the crossroads that immediately appears, turn right onto the D27 (wide shoulders). Pass La Rémarde and the view of the Château du Marais (on the right).

(8) When the road turns right, veer slightly left onto a path. Ignore a path on the right and continue north.

(9) Cross the D132 and continue along the path opposite. Pass under a bundle of high-voltage power lines and arrive at Les Bruyères, in front of a riding centre and a campsite.

(10) Continue straight ahead through meadows and fields until you reach a four-way crossroads.

(11) Turn left towards Machery. Cross the hamlet, following the street that turns left at a right angle, then right in front of a small square. Join Rue des Jardins in front.

(12) Follow this street to the left, then Rue du Bois d'Ardeau immediately to the right. Pass under the TGV line and A10 motorway bridge. You will reach the hamlet of Bois d'Ardeau shortly afterwards.

(13) In the centre of the hamlet, take a path that branches off to the right into the woods (third path on the right after the motorway). After 300 m in the woods, turn right. At the T-junction, go left. Continue straight ahead, north-northeast, to the next T-junction at the edge of the woods.

(14) Turn right and cross the fields, keeping to the one on your right. At the T-junction, turn left. Cross another wooded area and come out on the other side.

(15) Turn left, following the edge of the woods. Then turn right and descend gently towards Forges-les-Bains.

(16) Pass in front of the castle and then a wash house. Cross the D97 and climb up opposite to the chevet of the church.

(17) Go around the church on the left (by climbing up its forecourt or from the street below). Then turn right and, at the fork that appears immediately, turn right into Rue du Jeu de Paume. Continue straight ahead until you reach a roundabout.

(18) Go around the roundabout and continue straight ahead, still on Rue du Jeu de Paume. Walk along a wooded area on your left. Continue down the hill on the other side (taking the mixed pedestrian/cycle path after the last houses). You will reach a crossroads in the valley, in front of Pivot Castle.

(19) Cross the road and continue straight ahead along a path that leads into the woods. Climb steeply to reach the plateau. You will arrive at the entrance to Roussigny.

(20) Cross the D24 and continue straight ahead. Shortly afterwards, turn left. Take the first right, Rue de la Croix, and go to the end (cross; view of the bell tower of the church of Gometz-la-Ville and the buildings of Les Ulis, which rise above the horizon).

(21) Follow the road to the left. At the roundabout, turn right. Pass the hamlet of La Bénerie.

(22) Go over the old Aérotrain experimental track. Shortly afterwards, cross the D988 with extreme caution (very busy expressway). Continue straight ahead (cross) then turn left with the road. Pass the Armenon farm on your right, then the Quincampoix estate on your left. You will reach the village of Les Molières about 600 m further on.

(23) Take Rue de Roussigny on the right. At the crossroads, turn right and walk past a school. Then turn left and cross a wooded area to reach the D40 on the other side.

(24) Follow the road to the left (pavement). Ignore another road coming from the left and reach Place de la Mairie (church about 100 metres on the left).

(25) Turn right onto Rue de la Porte de Paris.

(26) Take the second left, Chemin de la Butte Pierreuse. At the end, turn right onto a path. Walk behind the properties and sports facilities. Then descend steeply to the bottom of the valley.

(27) Join Chemin de la Vallée at the bottom and follow it to the right for about 250 metres.

(28) Turn sharply left. At the T-junction, go right. In a right-hand bend, pass in front of the Midorge Fountain (masonry) and go back up.

(29) At the next intersection, turn left and continue uphill.

(30) After about 250 m (old gatekeeper's house), turn right onto the Greenway (pedestrians/cyclists) built on the platform of an old railway line (leave the GR®11 on the left, follow the GR®655). Stay on this path for almost 3 km on a steady, very gentle downhill slope. Pass behind the Château de Coubertin, located on the left.

(31) Come out onto a road and first turn right then left to quickly reach Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse station (E).

Return: Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreusestation , terminus of the RER B.

It's a long journey, but if necessary you can split it in two at Limours and take bus 5307 to Orsay, which runs every day. Another option is to go to the Briis-sous-Forges motorway station (accessible from (10) or (14), but relatively far away) and take bus 9102 to Orsay or 9103 to Massy, bearing in mind that they do not run on Sundays.
