Description of the walk

Parking is available at the car park at Le Marais, at the junction of the D27 and D131, near the Marais stables.

In addition to the signposting along almost the entire route, there are numbered markers for the Pays de Limours at various points, which are referred to in the description below.

Red and white signposts

(S/E) Follow the D27 towards Arpajon (east), staying on the left-hand side (beautiful row of plane trees). At the start of a right-hand bend and before a bridge, leave the road and turn left onto a path through the woods. Cross the bridge over the Ruisseau de Précedelle and continue to a crossroads.

(1) Turn left onto a grassy path and follow theGR®111north between the meadow and the field. The path curves to the right towards a pine forest. Continue until you reach a crossroads.

No signposts

(2) Leave theGR® and continue straight ahead (north-northeast). Pass a small camping area and reach the village of Berchevilliers. At the crossroads (bus shelter), turn left onto Rue du Bois Gaillard. Cross the bridge over the Prédecelle stream (ruined wash house on the right) and climb up to a crossroads at the Fontaine aux Cossons. Cross the D131 road (take care) and continue straight ahead along Rue des Morinières for a few metres.

Red and white markings

(3) At the fork, take theGR® trail on the right and head north-northwest between horse pastures. Just before the high-voltage power lines, turn right at a right angle. Head east, ignore a path on the right and reach a roundabout in Vaugrineuse.

(4) Take Rue du Chemin Tournant opposite. At the next crossroads (post box in the middle of the crossroads), turn left. At the next crossroads, turn right into Rue de la Gloriette.

Red and yellow markings

(5) From marker no. 49 to marker no. 48, the path runs alongside the Courson golf course, which is always on your left. Turn right onto the path heading south, with the Précedelle stream on your right. At the end of the path, turn left at a right angle and walk along a meadow on your right. At the end of this path, turn left again. The path is covered with white gravel and runs alongside a wood on your right.

Yellow signposting

(6) At marker no. 48-1, leave theGRP® trail on your right and continue straight ahead on the gravel path. This path bends to the right while remaining alongside the golf course.

No signposting

(7) At marker no. 48, leave the yellow markings on your left and continue south on a path (which is no longer gravel). You will reach a crossroads (marker no. 47-1). Opposite (due south), take the path between a wasteland (on your right) and old garden plots (on your left). Cross a road (marker no. 47-2) and continue south on a path through fields, ignoring a path branching off to the right.

Red and white markings

(8) Ignore a grassy path that branches off to the right, rejoin theGR®111and continue south. Cross a small road and continue downhill. Reach a street and then the Rond-Point de la Belle Etoile roundabout. Go around the roundabout and continue south on the road towards Breuillet. Follow the road, preferably on the left (pavement), and pass Borne n°47-7. Cross a first bridge over a stream, then a second bridge over the Rémarde; be careful, there is no pavement and the road is narrow. Just after the second bridge, note the commemorative stele on the right. When the road bends to the left, turn right onto a track towards the Folleville stud farm.

No signposts

(9) Leave theGR® trail on your left and continue straight ahead. The path is blocked to vehicles by small concrete blocks and then by two rows of tree trunks.

Yellow signposts

(10) At the junction with a road (marker no. 47-8), note a gate on the left opening onto a path leading to Baville Castle. Continue straight ahead (west-southwest) along a paved lane. Pass a farmhouse (Maison Neuve on the map) on your right, then a gate on your left leading to the castle, opposite a barrier opening onto a meadow.

(11) About 100 metres after the castle gate, look for the start of the path towards Ardenelle on the right. Be very careful as this path is not very well marked (if you turn left on the paved lane, you have gone too far; retrace your steps). The start of the path is marked first by a yellow arrow (almost illegible) on an old dead tree trunk, then by a yellow sign saying "Le Marais" on a young tree. Take the path on the right through the trees and you will soon come out into a meadow (on the right, you will see the roofs of the farm buildings you saw earlier). Take a barely visible path on the left in the meadow. Continue west along the edge of the woods. Turn right and descend to the hamlet of Ardenelle.

(12) Follow a small paved road and, when it bends to the left, take a path on the right that quickly becomes grassy. Walk alongside a house with a hedge, woodpiles and a few birch trees. Turn left and you will immediately come to a perpendicular path.

Yellow + red and yellow markings

Take this path on the right, heading north, across the fields. Enter the undergrowth, cross two river branches and come out onto the D27. Cross the road (be careful, busy road). Go up the path between two hedges (marker 47-13) and come out into the fields. Head north-northwest on the wide path between two plots of land and come out onto a small road. Turn left onto the road and continue for a few metres.

Orange markings

(13) At the "No Entry" sign, leave the road and turn right onto a path that runs alongside a wasteland. Then, going downhill, cross a small wood and stay on the edge of the wood on your left.

Red and white markings

(1) At the crossroads, follow the same route as on the way there: continue straight ahead, cross the small bridge, turn left to rejoin the road and follow it to the right until you reach the marsh (S/E).

Notes

The terrain is wet and potentially slippery between (5) and the left turn before, and between (11) and (1). Overall, this hike can be done in all seasons.

A 1:25,000 map is useful (at least the one accompanying this description).

Hike completed five times by the author, the first on 26 February 2006, the last on 21 December 2014.

Worth a visit

Two castles to see:
- Near the starting point, the 18th-century Château du Marais. The castle is clearly visible along the D27, on the outskirts of Le Marais towards the village of Val-Saint-Germain. The castle grounds are open to visitors (admission fee) on Sundays and public holidays from 2pm to 6.30pm (entrance on the D27, between (S) and (1)).
- Between (10) and (11), Château de Baville, built in the Louis XIII style.

The route crosses or runs alongside several rivers. Between (5) and (7), the path runs alongside the Courson golf course.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Everything was fine, but I didn't know how to download the map onto my phone. Fortunately, the instructions were very clear. Thank you.

After the Baville castle, where we had to turn right, it was no longer possible because the vegetation was too dense. We tried to go through the field and then along the path, but after 20 minutes of fighting brambles and nettles, we gave up. So between points 11 and 12, the passage is no longer open. Instead, take the long paved road that turns left, and at the Gabrielle tower, take the path on the right to reach Ardenelle. Even here, tree felling work made the passage difficult in dry weather, but I would say impossible in wet weather. Between points 6 and 7, which runs along the golf course on the right-hand side of the path, there is a similar construction site where no trees remain standing in the entire rectangle formed by points 6 and 7. It's not very pretty.

It's certainly not extraordinary, and you're never very far from major roads, but it's a very pleasant little walk overall, and quite varied.

I did come across a few hikers and cyclists, particularly on the path around the golf course (no one else after that).

The path through 9-10-11 is very straight, but it's OK.

A number of comments:
- As mentioned earlier, there is a very small sign (white text on a red background), nailed to the tree on the left at the entrance to the "car park" at the starting point, hidden behind the leaves, which indicates that parking is prohibited (you can also see it on Google Street). Well, there were 3-4 cars parked there when I arrived (and which were no longer there when I left, so most likely not locals). It's up to you to decide, I didn't have any problems myself. Alternatively, park opposite along Route des Bruyière, or see the next point.
- When you turn left onto Rue du Marais (D27), 80 metres further on, there's a recess on the left (I think you can park there without any problems, see previous point) which leads to a path at the end of which you can see a gate. You can take this path on foot, and about 5-10 metres before the gate, you can see a path that enters the trees on the right. It's quite clear and passable (at least when I passed it) and will take you straight to point 1, avoiding having to walk along the side of the D37, which is very busy. It won't avoid the noise, but it's something (I think the hike went that way at the beginning, but it was changed because the path was impassable, so it's probably been cleared since then).
- As noted in several comments, the path at point 11 is a bit complicated, but really nothing insurmountable. If you don't feel like it, I imagine you can turn right further on to go via rue de Vaugirard -> rue de la Justice (not tested).

At point 11 to be precise:
- The entrance to the path is behind a small heap of earth on the right (to the north). It's inconspicuous, but hard to miss (it's the only path that goes that way).
- Then there are a few brambles, but most of them have been cut down (I cut some down as I passed). No particular difficulties. Go round the copse to the right.
- You then come to a meadow, which becomes a little more complicated as the path disappears into the tall grass. The footpath takes you straight ahead (and if you look at a satellite view, you'll see a path that passes through there, taking you straight ahead into the forest, round to the right of a mound in this part of the meadow). Don't go that way, it leads to a mountain of dense brambles that is totally impassable, even when equipped (I went to check...). It's best to head west first, skirting the mound to the left. From there, reach the edge of the forest on the right (to the north), and look for a hole leading to a path in the forest (there are several holes, but only one leads to a path, and it is clearly visible from the edge). Note: when I passed through the meadow, a path leading to this entrance could be seen in the tall grass, with the grass crushed by footsteps, but barely visible.
- Once on the path, there are quite a few brambles, but someone had cleared them up a bit when I passed through, and I cleared them up quite a bit with a machete as well. I wouldn't say it's luxurious, but it's relatively clear, so it's easy to get through (maybe not in shorts, though). A mop or a small "hiking" machete can help if no-one has been there for a long time.

While hiking on this beautiful Sunday in March, I thought to myself, "Netra must have found this place!"
The description is detailed and well written, as always!

With the incessant rain over the last few months, there's a lot of mud on much of the route, but that's part of the fun!

The section between points 11 and 12 is completely impassable... you have to walk with a compass through thorny bushes at times

Pleasant and fairly easy with no elevation gain, perfect for getting back into walking. We appreciated not encountering any hunters. We discovered Baville Castle. At point 11, the path that starts on the right after going through a gate is overgrown with brambles. The ground is a bit muddy along the golf course at this time of year (it is possible to go through the meadow). The route is used by horse riders, but we did not encounter any.

Unfortunately, neither castle was visible due to the trees. The Château du Marais is temporarily closed to visitors at this time.
After passing the gate of Baville Castle on your left, to leave the path at point 11, take the path that starts on the right after going through a gate. Please note that this path is not very well used and is therefore very narrow and overgrown

I was looking for a short and easy hike (without too much elevation gain). This fits the bill nicely.
That said, apart from getting some fresh air, this hike isn't particularly interesting.
The scenery isn't particularly beautiful. There's a lot of walking through villages or along roads, and even a superb view of a high-voltage power line.
Overall, it's average.

A pleasant walk. The road between the car park and point 1 is dangerous. Please note that the path between points 11 and 12 after Baville Castle is becoming overgrown and difficult to see. The section along the golf course is a little tedious.

The route is very pleasant but you need to be careful as the signposts are not always visible!
There are numerous GR and PR trails, but they are not always marked in the same place on IGN 1:25,000 maps, depending on the year of publication.

We did this route on a beautiful, hot day at the end of summer. The route is only partially shaded, so if it's hot, remember to bring water.

It also passes through quite a few residential areas.

There aren't many places to stop for a picnic, and the undergrowth is dense.

Overall, the route is pleasant, easy and well signposted.

A very good description. No difficulty finding it. We met hikers, locals out for a stroll, grandparents with their grandchildren and their dog... The castles: the view is quite limited and disappointed us. There is no walk along one of the rivers. It was nice to walk around the golf course.
