From the Frange Verte to the Hauts de Jarrie, return via the Voie Romaine

The Grenoble metropolitan area has developed a Frange Verte (Green Belt) to the south, bringing together several walking trails that are popular with everyone and offer views of the mountains.
This route takes you along the Frange Verte in Échirolles, up the Combe de la Gouderie to the Étang de Jarrie-Le-Haut, then down the Voie Romaine, which no longer exists today.
The route is classified as easy, although the climb up the Gouderie may put some people off. Fortunately, it is relatively short.

Description of the walk

Park on Avenue de la République in Échirolles, at the Frange Verte park (Echirolles-Village).
As the park is popular, numerous parking spaces have been provided. Alternatively, take the tram.

(S/E) Walk along the short right-hand side of the park heading south towards the woods to reach the wide, sheltered footpath running from west to east. Turn left towards the east. The route to follow is marked with a yellow line on the trees and signs. After a few hundred metres, you will come to a fork with a sign.

(1) Turn right onto the only wide forest path going uphill. The sign says: Combe de la Gouderie: altitude 240, Étang de Haute Jarrie: 2.62 km. Follow the yellow markings on the trees. Climb this forest path, which will soon turn south and gradually level out. On this climb, pass the hamlets of Pend Loup and La Savoyarde to reach La Gouderie, a crossroads of five different trails.

(2) Head towards the entrance to the meadow opposite without entering it. Take the forest path on the left, towards Étang de Haute Jarrie or Le Rucher. The path heads south and runs along the meadow on the right. After the farm on the left, take a tarmac road which soon turns south-east.
You will arrive at the junction of two tarmac roads.

(3) Enter the Haute Jarrie Pond nature reserve here, located mainly on the left side of the road between the barriers. Follow the path along the reserve. Informative signs about the wildlife hide a path on the left leading to a pontoon with a view of the pond (the attached route includes this passage to the pontoon). Leave the nature reserve to the south and follow the tarmac road for a few hundred metres to reach a roundabout called Le Plâtre.

(4) Turn left north towards Échirolles Village. Go up the tarmac road and follow the signs for Échirolles Village. The vertical markings to follow are white and red. You will reach a Y-shaped crossroads.

(5) Leave the tarmac road that branches off to the left and take the forest path downhill opposite. Enter the woods and follow the signs for Voie Romaine. At the bottom of the hill, you will come to a chapel.

(6) Continue to the right, finish the descent and you will find a new crossroads of paths at the industrial estate.

(7) Turn left, walk along a canal and then continue along the wide footpath under the trees to reach the original crossroads.

(1) Follow the same route as on the way out to return to the Frange Verte car park (S/E).

Notes

There are no known water sources.
The area around the lake is not equipped for picnics, which is a shame.
The climb up La Gouderie, which is a little steep at the start, and the descent via the Voie Romaine are a little rocky, but nothing impossible. Walking poles are welcome.
The Grenoble metropolitan area has described other hikes around the Frange Verte.

Worth a visit

(S/E) Tramway nearby, about 200 metres away, if you don't want to use a car.
Between (2) and (3) Unobstructed views of the Belledonne massif on your left and the Vercors massif on your right.

A pleasant short hike just a stone's throw from the town, done with a small group of senior citizens. The circular hike on the plateau is very pleasant and the walk to the pond is very informative, teaching you lots about the surrounding flora and fauna.

We set off from Marie Curie tram stop on line A (towards Pont de Claix L'étoile). It's easy to reach the green belt and the Gouderie valley. On the plateau, there's a magnificent view of Belledonne and Taillefer (still covered in snow...). We added a variation described in No. 25 236 (Tour de la colline de Champagnier). But we did it in reverse. From the roundabout called Le Platre, No. 4: instead of heading north, we headed south. We headed straight for the Saut du Moine and returned via Champagnier and the Haute Jarrie lake. We descended to Echirolles Village via the return route described above. This made a good 13 km in total (done in the afternoon at a good pace). A lovely, very easy walk. The paths on the plateau are very busy.

Wednesday, 2 February Alternative route: Voie Romaine, Etang de Haute Jarrie Le Plâtre Le Rucher Tour Hertzienne. No signage issues, busy route on the way there... few people on the way back (watch out for mountain bikes on the descent!).

An easy route, with a 1 km climb but nothing too challenging. For walkers in good physical condition, allow around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours.

A pleasant walk.

A very pleasant walk near Grenoble, completed today without any difficulty, offering magnificent views of the Vercors and Chartreuse mountains and beautiful paths through the woods.

We were surprised to find that such beautiful fields of grain could still "exist" so close to Grenoble. With the rain of the last few weeks, the landscape was dressed in a beautiful shade of green which, with the blue sky and these fields of grain, enchanted us!

Thank you for this lovely route.
