Cossey hamlet, viewpoint and Comboire ridge

This short hike or walk will allow you to discover one of the oldest hamlets in Claix, with its chapel and 16th-century houses. You will then walk along the Rocher de Comboire ridge with its viewpoint, from where you can enjoy a truly extraordinary view of the entire Grenoble conurbation as well as the Taillefer, Belledonne and Chartreuse ranges, stretching as far as Mont Blanc in good weather.

Description of the walk

The start of the walk is at the small car park by the Garlettes cemetery in Seyssins, accessible by bus via TAG network routes 19 and 21.

(S/E) Leave the car park, turn left and walk carefully along the D106d to the junction.

(1) At the junction, take the small road on the left for about 700 m, until you reach the hamlet of Les Fenouillères.

(2) Take a small road on the left called Chemin des Fenouillères, which becomes a track. Follow it to the hamlet of Cossey.

(3) Walk past the chapel, take Rue de la Pouya and follow it for about 200 m. Turn left onto Rue du Clot, cross Rue du Pré Balmet and take a path opposite which joins Route de Comboire.

(4) Cross this road, follow it to the right for about 50 metres, then turn left onto Chemin du Fort.

(5) Take the path on the right for 250 m and, at the fork (near a track), turn sharply left. The path begins the climb leading to the viewpoint (hiking signs present).

(6) Enjoy the view, then head north-east along a good path towards the ridge.

(7) Leave the track and continue in the same direction, follow the ridge and take the descent to a junction.

(8) Turn left onto the path that heads due south and climbs slightly. Follow it in the same direction for just over 1.5 km until you reach the small road leading to the fort.

(9) Take the road on the far right and head back down to the D106d.

(1) Follow it to the left until you reach the car park at the start (S/E).

Notes

This hike is suitable in all seasons, but some sections can be very muddy after heavy rain in spring and autumn. The descent after the ridge can be very slippery.

Worth a visit

In the hamlet of Cossey, take the time to pop into the little chapel and admire the recently restored paintings. Note that during the Christmas period, a nativity scene is displayed there.

Apart from the short stretch of road without a hard shoulder that you have to walk along for a short distance on the way there and back to reach the starting point, this is a walk with beautiful views at the top by the orientation tables and occasionally along the way.

A truly excellent hike. The description was spot on, and it was easy to follow. The duration and distance indicated were accurate (we did the hike as a family, with a 7-year-old child)
Be careful on the two ascents and descents towards the top of the ridge: these two sections are short but quite intense (and must be quite chaotic in wet weather).
Magnificent views of Grenoble and Pont de Claix.

One minor criticism: the road you have to walk along (for a fairly short distance) at the start/finish point is quite dangerous with heavy traffic, so you really need to walk on the side of the road.
You can refill your water bottles at the cemetery, taking care to respect the site, of course .

A lovely walk offering magnificent views of Grenoble, Pont de Claix, Belledonne and Le Taillefer, as well as the Vercors and Le Moucherotte. The route takes you through a pretty holly wood. The climb up the valley to the viewpoint is steep; take care in slippery or wet conditions.
From the viewpoint, you can take a return trip to the fort (closed) via a small path that runs above the fort
