Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Amettes Town Hall, opposite the house of Saint-Benoît Joseph Labre.

(S/E) Take Rue de l’Église on the right, then immediately turn left onto the path that winds down alongside the grounds of this birthplace.

(1) At the end of the path, turn left onto Rue d’En-bas, then right at the next junction onto Rue d’Auchy-au-Bois. Pass Rue des Loups on your right and carry on straight ahead. This road narrows and leads into the countryside.

(2) At the junction, turn right and, 60 metres further on, turn right again. Follow the path for about 500 metres and, at the junction (Vierge), turn left until you reach the next crossroads.

(3) Turn left, walk for about 500 m until you reach the junction, then turn right onto the straight path.

(4) At the next crossroads, turn left onto the small road and follow it for about 400 m.

(5) At the Y-junction, leave the main road and take the stony track on the left. Continue for about 900 m.

(6) Follow the farm track to the right for about 300 m.

(7) Take the path on the left until you reach a junction where a road meets a path.

(8) Take the path on the left, then turn right at the four-way junction.

(9) Cross the small country road with care and head straight on along the stony track. Keep going in the same direction, ignoring a first track on the right and then a second on the left.

(10) After crossing the fields, at a fork in the road, take the small path on the left. Once you’re back on the tarmac, leave it 90 m further on by turning left onto the small path, the start of which is marked by large stones and runs alongside a stream. When you leave this path at the property, continue to the right.

(11) At the junction, turn left and follow this small lane until you reach a side street at a bend.

(12) Turn left onto Rue des Berceaux and head up towards the church. At the church, take the steps on the left and walk up to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

In spring, listen to the larks singing in the fields and try to spot them high up in the sky.

A lovely, enjoyable walk, particularly over the last 5 km. Not much variety in the first section (farmland). No particular difficulties. A few gentle hills that can be tackled without too much effort.
The weather was fairly favourable, though there were a few muddy patches on the paths due to previous rainfall, so good, grippy footwear and walking poles are essential. Very little tarmac: that’s brilliant. And a lovely stretch along the Cauchiette.
This walk is also recommended for occasional walkers with no particular sporting ambitions, who take their time but are mindful of their physical health.
All in all, well done on this route.
