From La Nave to Puits Sans Fond

Numerous trails for a walk that stretches between mountains and valleys.
This hike is a great way to spend a day outdoors.

At the end of December 2019, after the rains, the paths became very difficult and particularly slippery (even on the flat sections!), both on the normal route and on the alternative route. Under these conditions, the walk can be classified as very difficult.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the community hall in Fontaine-lès-Hermans.

(S/E) Follow the D69 south-east towards Nédonchel for 400 metres.

Red and yellow markings for the GRP® Tour du Ternois Nord

(1) Turn right into Rue Neuve (hiking sign). Ignore the two streets on the left and climb the gentle slope. After a left-right turn (altitude 183 m), head straight towards Fiefs, ignoring a path on the right and a street on the left. Reach the D77.

Section outside the GRP®

(2) Cross the departmental road to take the path opposite. After a cattle crossing (sometimes muddy), turn right to approach a few houses. Turn left along the houses and reach a tarmac path. Follow it to the left.

(3) Cross the square.

Red and yellow markings for the GRP® Tour du Ternois Nord

Pass in front of the cemetery and immediately turn left. Continue to the crossroads in front of the woods.

(4) Turn right to follow its western edge(very difficult passage as it has been damaged by motorised vehicles, which I have reported to Suricate...). After a right turn, reach the D92E1 at the hamlet of Quévaussart.

(5) Follow the D92 on the left with caution. Just after the farm, turn right onto the path (it feels like you are entering the farmyard and there is often mud). After a left turn, you will reach a T-junction. Turn right, ignore the path on the right and you will arrive near a green waste collection point (on the left).

(6) Leave the tarmac road and take the path opposite. A steep descent will lead you to Fontaine-lès-Boulans (limestone, flint and roots make this descent very difficult in wet weather). Join a small road and follow it to the left until you reach the D94.

(7) Turn right, passing in front of the church.

Section not part of the GRP®

Continue past the castle. After a large farm on the right, leave the D94 and take the path on the left. After a steep climb, you will reach a crossroads. Continue straight ahead on the path (which is sometimes difficult) and you will arrive at a small road near the hamlet of Ramiéville. Take care.

(8) Follow it for a few metres to the right and turn left onto a good path until you reach a T-junction (altitude 175 m). Turn right to join the D92 at the hamlet of Livossart.

(9) (alternative route in the practical information section) Continue straight ahead on Rue d'Honninghem. Turn right before passing a farm on the left (with yurts). When the street turns left, take the straight path opposite, heading south-east for 1 km until you reach a crossroads (altitude 189 m). Continue straight ahead on a slightly difficult path between the fields and reach another crossroads.

(10) Turn left onto the tarmac road. After 800 m, turn left. A few dozen metres further on, just after the small wood, turn right to descend into the beautiful valley. Ignore the paths at the pumping station and continue to a T-junction. Turn right, then immediately left onto a path (Ruelle aux Loups) to reach a small road.

(11) Follow it for 150 metres to the right, then turn left. After about 100 metres, turn right, stay on this wide path which turns right, then left and joins the D77.

(12) Cross it and take the path opposite, which is often very wet and even spongy. You will arrive at the Puits Sans Fond stream. Cross it via a metal footbridge. Turn right (at an altitude of 103m).

GRP® Tour de la Lys

Turn right again (at an altitude of 115 m) to reach the new cemetery of Febvin-Palfart, then the D77. Follow it on the left to the church of Febvin-Palfart and the south-western corner of the second cemetery,Prudence.

(13) Turn left and pass in front of the town hall. Ignore the road that branches off to the left. When the road turns left, continue straight ahead on the path and continue to the junction with the D94, elevation 134.

No markings
.
(14) Cross the departmental road and take the path opposite towards the Bois de Fontaine. The path is in poor condition (large ruts in March 2025, which I avoided by walking along the inner edge) but it is a beautiful climb that takes you back to the Nédonchel valley. On the descent, at the end of the path, leave the woods.

(15) Turn left onto the grassy path (altitude 160 m), just before the D69. You will come to a T-junction.

(16) Turn right and you will see the first houses of Fontaine-lès-Hermans. At the crossroads, go straight ahead and join the D 69. Follow it on the left, the car park is 100m away, on the left (S/E).

Notes

Good equipment is essential, as some paths can be very wet.

Unfortunately, the cafés in Nédonchel and Fiefs have closed down. As for the one in Febvin-Palfart, it is very rarely open (you may want to try calling 03 21 11 21 24).

I think the cemeteries along the route could serve as water points (to be verified).

Alternative route after point 9 Continue straight ahead along Rue d'Honninghem. When the road turns right, take the path on the left. After 200 metres, you will reach a three-way junction. Take the right-hand path and after 700 metres, turn left (recent wind farm) to join the D 95. Follow it to the right for about 50 metres. Then turn left. At the crossroads (hiking posts), continue straight ahead (the path can be very slippery). Ignore a path that branches off to the left and join the D 77 via a very narrow and slightly damp path. Cross the D 77 and take the small road opposite towards Pippemont. After 400 metres of tarmac, turn left onto a wide path. After 400 metres, you will reach a three-way junction where you turn right (withGR®® 127 andGRP®® du Tour de la Lys) to descend towards the stream (Puits sans Fond). You sometimes have the choice between fording the stream or taking the footbridge on the right. At the end of December 2019, I chose the footbridge! Then there's a nice climb to reach the centre of Pippemont. Turn right onto the tarmac road. After 50 metres, at the three-way junction, take the left fork, still followingthe GR®® and GRP®® signs. You then walk along the Puits sans Fond and find the previous description at the metal footbridge (after point 12).

Worth a visit

Château à Fontaine-lès-Boulans, visible on the left, after the church.
Farm-castle, on the right, just after the footbridge over the Puits Sans Fond.

Hello Joorange,
Between 4 and 5, there is a steep, rocky path downhill where you need to be careful, but with this sunny, windy weather, there is no humidity. As for Livossart, point 9, I did not take the alternative route.
Thank you for your walks.
Michel

What condition was the path between points 4 and 5 in? I went there a while ago and it was awful! Fortunately, it was already dry.

At point 9, did you take the normal route or the alternative?

Thank you, Joorange, for another superb hike, with lots of trails and paths and minimal tarmac, just enough to cross villages and hamlets. We set off from Febvin Palfart and had a picnic on a bench in Fontaine les Boulans.
This hike is best done in dry weather as some sections can be tricky in the rain: a trail with deep ruts (Fontaine woods between 14 and 15) or a lovely, well-trodden path, very pleasant in dry weather, before Fontaine les Boulans (before 7) but especially before point 10, part of the path has disappeared under tall grass and ends below the two fields that border it. We did not take it and walked along the edge of the field instead.
A beautiful day's walk! 😊

I went hiking in the area last Wednesday and encountered the same problem with tall grass (and I'm much shorter!!)
Luckily, the paths are nice and dry!

Thank you, Joorange. A very beautiful hike today, with a little drizzle in the morning but very dry ground (current drought). The signs are very good. Apparently, new signposts are being put up on some sections. It should be noted that at this time of year, some sections of the paths are very little used (even by farmers) and the grass grows up to thigh height (I am almost 1.90 metres tall ). As a result, it is difficult to see the ground, and therefore the ruts or the few concrete blocks or stones under the grass (risk of sprains). Similarly, due to the brambles and nettles on these sections, long trousers are preferable.

It's not very easy to indicate a place that is set back from the road.
But I think the village hall is signposted.
The easiest way is to use GPS coordinates.

If you have any problems, you can start the walk in Febvin-Palfart: parking is available in front of the church and, for groups, there is a large car park on the D77 between the new cemetery and the church.

A very beautiful hike under a bright sun
For hikers using the paper route, the starting point is poorly marked, which is a shame
The rest of the hike is more than pleasant
