Rosconnec marsh route via the Sant-Dispar Chapel

From the beautiful green setting where the Sant-Dispar Chapel nestles, flanked by its calvary and fountain, you can reach the protected area of the Rosconnec marshes at the confluence of the Aulne and its tributary, the Douffine, through the undergrowth.
These meadows, which are flooded at high tide, are protected areas for the aquatic phragmite, a small passerine bird measuring 12 to 13 cm in length and weighing 10 to 14 g. This species is one of the birds protected by the European Commission.

Description of the walk

Access: Leave Dineault via Rue du Cap (east), with the water tower on your left. At Croas ar Guilly (crossroads) where three roads meet, take the second left towards Ménez Guen. Continue along this small road, passing Ménez Guen on your right and then Le Restou on your left.
Turn left at the next three-way junction (cross and chapel sign), then turn right at the first road towards the Loguispar farm.
The chapel car park is on the right, just below the entrance to the farm.

Yellow markings (fairly regular but sometimes old).

(S/E) From the car park, look for a statue on the left, head towards the chapel and its calvary, then continue to the fountain 50 metres below.
Continue along the path which descends for about a hundred metres.

(1) Turn right into the woods onto the small wooden footbridge to cross a stream. Go up the path that joins a small road. Follow this road to the right until the next intersection before the entrance to the Kerampage farm (no sign). Note the beautiful view of the rolling countryside.

(2) Take a sharp left turn (sign for Trévoazec) and follow this small road uphill, passing under two power lines before reaching the entrance to the hamlet of Trévoazec (no sign).

(3) Leave the road and turn left onto a wooded sunken lane, descending towards the hamlet of Concily. When you reach a wider lane, turn left towards the hamlet.

(4) Leave the road opposite, turn right between a house on the left and a shed on the right and follow the farm track.

(5) At the crossroads, turn left and continue straight on to the hamlet of Cosquinquis.

(6) First turn right then left to go around the hamlet and continue north on a path that climbs through the woods towards the large hamlet of Rosconnec. On the other bank, you can see the bell tower of the Saint-Sébastien Chapel in Saint-Ségal (the subject of another hike ). At the junction with a small road, follow it to the right towards Rosconnec. Viewpoint over the meanders of the Aulne towards the west.

(7) Go around the hamlet on the right and, at the bend in the road, follow the farm track opposite, which then turns left. Begin a long descent on a grassy farm track between fields and woods. This track overlooks the river, which is hidden by trees, and you can hear the hum of vehicles on the Quimper-Brest expressway.

Go through the barrier near the information board to get a view of the marsh, a landscape that changes depending on the tide level.
At the point near the expressway bridge, you can see the confluence of the Douffine and Aulne rivers, which join the sea in the Brest harbour. You are now in the protected area of the Rosconnec marshes. Retrace your steps and continue to the right, going around the tip at the edge of the meadow, then take a wooded farm track to reach the hamlet of Kermoguen, which you go around on the right.

(8) At the exit, take the small road that climbs to the right. Another viewpoint over the meanders of the river. Pass under two power lines before and after the Kervellec farm (watch out for the dogs, which are a bit aggressive; one was running loose when we passed in July 2018). At the next three-way junction, take the hairpin bend under the power line and follow this road for about 200 metres towards Rozarnou (no sign).

No signposts.

(9) Ignore the signpost inviting you to enter the woods (we will find it again) and continue down the small road that leads to the old Rozarnou Mill, now a beautiful property with its own pond and woods. Continue a little further to reach the banks of the Aulne, which is worth a break for its peace and tranquillity.

(10) Turn around to go back up and reach the fork in the woods.

Yellow markings are clearly visible.

(9) Turn right into the Bois de Rozarnou, a private wood where passage is permitted (sign). Cross a footbridge and continue climbing steadily under the fir trees. The path runs alongside the stream that used to feed the old Moulin de Rozarnou. Cross a slightly damp passage on somewhat wobbly logs and you will find the footbridge you crossed on the way there on your right.

(1) Turn right and follow the same route as on the way there to return to the chapel and the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Saint-Exuper Chapel
Sant-Dispar is similar to Saint-Exuper of Toulouse, a 5th-century bishop who protected his people from barbarian invasions and whose name means "without equal, the best" in Breton.

The Douffine (or Doufine1) is a river in Finistère, a tributary of the Aulne downstream from Châteaulin, on the borders of Saint-Ségal and Pont-de-Buis (through which it flows); the site of the confluence is known locally as "la pointe du couple" (the couple's point). It rises in Brasparts, on the south-western side of Roc'h Cléguer.

The Rosconnec Marsh: Bretagne Vivante manages the 57 hectares of the Rosconnec coastal marsh reserve. Volunteers actively manage and maintain it.
Between 2004 and 2009, these wetlands were purchased to help protect the aquatic phragmites
These consist of three different biotopes: meadows and ponds where animals can feed, and reed beds that serve as their refuge and sleeping quarters.
To prevent the reeds from taking over the entire area, the meadows are naturally maintained by a herd of eight Nantes cows.

There are several viewpoints overlooking the rolling countryside and the meandering Aulne river.
At the (10), on the banks of the Aulne, you can see a few sailing boats passing by.

Since Storm Ciarhan, it is no longer possible to cross Rozarnou Wood. We had to turn back and take the paved road between point 9 and point 1 to return to the starting point.

On the way back, it was impossible to go through the woods. Too many fallen trees. Returned by road.

The route starts off strong with a steep climb, and there are more to come along the way. The walk took place during a dry spell and at low tide, offering spectacular views of the Aulne river, which was practically dry.
As for the dogs, ever-present, this time they were kept on a lead.
A good, challenging walk.

A lovely walk with some good climbs, probably better at high tide.

Hello, a very pleasant walk on this 1st of May. Rhododendrons around the chapel and a multitude of flowers in the undergrowth – delightful.
A challenging walk with some steep climbs.
We didn't meet anyone, we just enjoyed the birdsong
The circular walk took three hours, not counting breaks to admire the alder trees
The map and explanations were very informative, even the grumpy Chinese were there!
Thank you!

The sun is finally back, so I'm taking advantage of it to go for a walk. There are some steep climbs at times. The roads are very quiet, with only a group of about ten teenagers out for a walk on the route to be seen.
The tide is low, so I'll come back at high tide to see the difference. The 9.5 km will take 2 hours and 20 minutes, with a good sweat at the end...which was the goal.
Thank you for the walk.

A very beautiful hike, with hardly any cars and very few paved roads. The trail passes through the forest, then runs alongside the marshes and ends in the forest. There is a superb chapel to see at the start and an old mill that has been renovated along the way. Very few people. The best.
