In the woods of Saint-Gildas between the chapel and the wind turbines.

From the clearing surrounded by beech, chestnut and cypress trees, discover the long Saint-Gildas Chapel and, a little further down, its associated fountain, then venture into the Saint-Gildas woods overlooking the Châteaulin valley. Continue through this area where there are numerous wind turbines.
The long climb up the old Châteaulin-Quimper Roman road may leave you panting before you reach the bare heights of Ménez Quelc'h.

Description of the walk

From Cast, follow the D7 towards Châteaulin. After about 1 km, at the sign for Chapelle Saint-Gildas, turn right and continue for about 500 m to find the car park on the right.

Yellow markings (old and sparse)

(S/E) From the car park, cross the road and enter the clearing where the chapel is located. Go around it on the left, passing a small calvary and then a rocky outcrop. Continue along the wooded path until you reach the Fontaine Saint-Gildas sign. Turn right to reach the fountain, located about 50 m away.

(1) Retrace your steps, turn right and you will come to the D7. Cross it carefully and continue straight ahead along the gravel path (signposted Roz ar C'haro).

(2) At the three-way junction, take the left-hand path and follow the track into the coniferous woodland alongside a stream.

(3) Cross a small footbridge and continue along the path halfway up the slope. Cross another footbridge and begin the climb, still in the woods. Note the imposing pine trees felled by storms.
Reach a wide forest path that veers to the right and ignore the sign on the right-hand side indicating "Parking Ty Ru". Return to the D7 and cross it with caution. Continue straight ahead. Join the "route des crêtes" (white markings), which you will follow for a short distance. Walk along the edge of the woods with wind turbines on your left. Turn right and you will come to a crossroads.

(4) Leave "le circuit des crêtes" straight ahead and turn left. Follow this path downhill along the edge of the field where the wind turbines are located. Cut across an access path to a new group of wind turbines and reach a wide dirt track that descends towards the Roc'h Guillou farm, passing under two power lines.

(5) At the signpost, turn right onto the small road. At Kerhuibu, note the imposing oak tree on the left. Continue along this small road which descends towards a stream near the hamlet of Lindour.

(6) Pass under the Quimper-Brest railway line, descend to another stream, then climb back up to a T-junction and turn right.

(7) At the three-way junction, turn right and cross the bridge over the same railway line. Continue along a long, almost straight climb (the old Châteaulin-Quimper Roman road), ignoring all the paths and roads that branch off. If travelling in a group, stick to the left-hand side as the grassy verge is relatively wide. You will reach a crossroads at the top of this beautiful climb.

(8) Turn right, follow the small road that runs alongside a row of wind turbines and pass under two power lines.

(9) At the signpost, turn left (sign for Saint-Gildas chapel 2.5 km) and follow the lane that leads to a place called Le Grannec. Turn right and enter a slightly dark area of coniferous trees (note the shape of the conifers). Continue to the first path on the right in the woods.

(10) Turn onto this path and you will arrive at a car park. Follow the road to the left for about 100 metres.

Off the marked trail

(16) Turn right onto a wide path (mountain bike signposting) and follow this wide path through a partially deforested area. Keep the wind turbines on your right and you will arrive at a fork in the road that you passed on the way there, near a wind turbine.

(4) Continue for about 100 metres and turn left into the Bois de Saint-Gildas. Note a throne carved into a cypress tree, continue straight ahead, pass the Ty Ru car park and come out onto a small road.

(12) Follow this small road to the left and you will come to a multiple crossroads.

(13) Turn right, follow the road and you will find the car park on your left (S/E).

Notes

Route through wooded area (many trees across the path since Storm Ciaran in October 2023).
A long climb (old Roman road) of 2 km, almost in a straight line on a small road with a 150 m elevation gain explains the average rating. However, the rest of the route is easy.

Worth a visit

Departure at 1:30 pm.
Hike for two; paper map and GPS.
Grey weather, mild temperature.
Magnificent starting point with its chapel and fountain.
From points 1 and 4, we admire the waterfall, then the path becomes very muddy. Numerous trees fallen due to recent storms hinder our progress.
Then the route is very passable without any difficulties.
From points 7 to 8, a sign indicates a 7% incline. You have to take your time. A minimum level of physical fitness is required. The passage of the women's Tour de France cycling race on this section has left some graffiti on the road.
Once past this stage, the route poses no problems.
We reach the starting point at 4.30 pm, just as it starts to rain.
Overall: a very beautiful hike. The autumn colours add to the beauty. Once again, we see the damage caused by Storm Ciaran.
Recommended for anyone in good physical condition.
Many thanks for this hike.

Thank you for this review.

Yes, the final stretch of Roman road is a bit of a slog, but it's difficult to avoid.
Perhaps you could do the route in the opposite direction, but I've never tried that.
Best regards

A pleasant route, with woods, moorland and also that endless climb (walking sticks were appreciated).

Nice route at the start and end, but the walk was spoiled by that long 2 km hill on the road.

Beautiful landscapes that make us forget the difficulty of the long climb up the Roman road.
A lovely hike: one to do again

It's true that the climb up the Roman road is steep, but the section through the woods and the passage over Menez Quelc'h make us forget this difficulty.
