(S/E) With your back to the old station building, take the path that runs alongside a playground with picnic tables and a sports court. Follow this long path. Pass the old stands of the Aulne cycle route on your left (metal safety barriers). Follow this long, straight, tree-lined path overlooking the river. This is the former route of the Châteaulin–Carhaix railway line, which operated until the 1970s. Continue along a dirt track.
(1) Join a small road at the Roz Lezabannec residential complex and walk through this group of houses. At the signpost, near an old disused tennis court, turn right up a small path which leads onto a small road. Follow this road to the right, pass through the Lezabannec farm and continue along a wide, stony track between meadows. This is an ancient Roman road. Walk alongside the long wall of a beautiful property on your right and a Peugeot dealership on your left until you reach the D887.
(2) Cross the road and continue straight on along the path between the fields and meadows until you reach the entrance to a housing estate.
(3) Carry on straight ahead; at the road, turn right towards a large school. Stay on the designated footpath on the right.
(4) Opposite the entrance to the Collège and Lycée Saint-Louis, cross at the pedestrian crossing and take a path running alongside a shop called “Malice”. Cross a road and carry on straight ahead.
Turn left onto a steep sunken path (marker on a tree). Cross the road you crossed earlier and continue straight down the slope. Pass the old farm with its renovated buildings and cross a new road.
(5) First turn right then left to join the narrow lane that runs alongside the fire station and leads to the towpath.
(6) Facing the canal, ignore the yellow arrow indicating a left turn and turn right instead. Follow this towpath and pass the drinking water treatment plant. Look out for a stone marker by the side of the path indicating that you are 358 km from Nantes via the canal. Pass the Coatigrac’h Lock. A sign tells you that, thanks to this micro-power station, Châteaulin was, as early as 1887, the third town in France to have electric street lighting. Continue along the canal, past the campsite, and in the final bend, look out for the Notre-Dame Chapel on the hill.

(7) At the modern footbridge, turn left to cross the river: view of the other two bridges, the main road bridge and the old railway bridge, which is now also a road bridge. On Quai Carnot, turn right and continue to the bridge: view of the town hall with its belfry-shaped tower. Cross the bridge and follow Quai Jean Moulin to the right. Turn left into the street between the town hall and the post office. Take the first left, then turn right twice more to go round Saint-Idunet Church. Walk past the war memorial on your right and enter Rue de l’Église, passing close to the market halls. On your left, look out for the old grain market building.

(8) Head up Grand Rue on the right, pass the clinic on your right and ignore the next street, which is also on the right.
(9) When you come to a large concrete cross, turn left into a narrow lane, leaving the street ahead of you, and follow it to the end. Cross a road, then the car park near the École Marie Curie, and return to the starting car park (S/E).
