Along the Aulne in Châteaulin

With the River Aulne, in its final stretch before the sea, as our guide, let’s set off to explore Port-Launay, a former river port. Let’s follow the towpath and then climb up to the Notre-Dame Chapel, which offers a view of Châteaulin, before returning to the river.

Description of the walk

Coming from the Brest-Quimper expressway, at the Ar Pouilhod roundabout, head towards Châteaulin by taking the D887 down towards the town centre. At a fork at the bottom, turn right towards Crozon (no lorries) and arrive at the car park of the old station near the École Marie Curie, Rue Raoul Anthony.

(S/E) With your back to the old station building, take the path that runs alongside a playground with picnic tables and a sports area. Follow this long path. Pass the old stands of the Aulne cycle route on your left (metal safety barriers). Follow this long, straight, tree-lined path overlooking the river. This is the route of the Châteaulin-Carhaix railway line, which operated until the 1970s. Continue along a dirt track.
Join a small road at a residential property (chain blocking vehicle access) and walk through this group of houses.

(1) At the signpost, near a basketball court, leave thePR® by turning left onto the D48A, which you follow for a few dozen metres. Turn left into the first one-way street leading down towards the church. Cross the square in front of it, with its fountain, and head down towards the Aulne near the war memorial.

(2) Turn left and follow the towpath alongside Avenue Louise Bobet, which was the long, straight finish line of the famous Route de l’Aulne, where the great cycling champions of every era raced from 1935 to 1998. Note the old stands on your left. Pass under the old railway bridge.

(3) Head down to the right, via a flight of steps, towards the lock where a fish pass has been installed in the riverbed, allowing you to see, through large glass windows, the salmon and other fish swimming up the Aulne (self-guided tour).

Yellow PR® signposting

Head to the bridge, cross the Aulne and then turn right onto Quai Cosmao. Cross at the pedestrian crossing towards Rue Garrec.

(4) Head left up this dead-end street, which runs behind the old Moulin Du Roy (now disused) and continues as a narrow alley. You’ll come to a sign indicating the way to a viewpoint.

(5) Turn left to climb up to the first viewpoint, which overlooks the whole of Châteaulin. A second viewpoint is located about fifty metres further up (take care at both sites).

(6) Retrace your steps back down to the alleyway and continue left along the street to reach the Notre-Dame Chapel, built on the hillside on the north-western face of a hillock that has been a fortified site since the 10th century. View over the town. The stone house near the church was the former presbytery.

(7) After exploring this chapel and its lovely viewpoint, head down Rue Notre-Dame to reach a roundabout. Take the path to the right of the roundabout to cross a beautiful modern footbridge over the Aulne.

(8) Turn right onto the quay, then continue along the towpath, passing the campsite. Note the royal ferns by the riverbank. You will come within sight of the Coatigrac’h Lock.

(9) Turn left at the gable end of a dairy, take the path at the entrance to the brand-new community swimming pool "Les Bassins de l'Aulne" and walk up the street along the left-hand pavement

(10) Turn right into the first street, Rue de la Piscine, then keep left and continue, still on the left, along Rue du Lycée. Pass in front of the Jean Moulin College and Sixth Form College.

(11) Turn right onto Place du Champ de Foire (currently a car park), cross it and head up Grand Rue to the right for about ten metres until you reach the first pedestrian crossing.

(12) Cross the road and take a narrow passage between the houses to reach the Venelle de Kerstrat. Follow it to the right, then continue right along a street to return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

Toilets at the start car park and in Port-Launay.
Picnic tables in the public garden at the start.
Plenty of benches along the route.

Good trainers are sufficient for this route.

Note: From the car park at the start to the houses of the Résidence Commandant Gourvés, just before point (1), this old railway line is easily accessible for a return trip (5 km) by pushchairs and people with reduced mobility: the route is largely wooded.

Departure at 1:30 pm.
Mild weather, grey sky.
The first part goes well, we are overlooking the canal.
We take advantage of our visit to Port Launay to see the Christmas nativity scene. It is a listed building. Two people are busy preparing it. We arrive two days too early.
At point 2, there is no room for walkers.
Between 4 and 5, a barrier blocks the way. A note from the town hall mentions danger.
It is raining more and more.
At point 9, a huge puddle prevents us from leaving the towpath. We leave it a little further on. The road is very busy between 9 and 10 +.
We reach our cars at 4.30pm. We are soaked despite our waterproof clothing and umbrellas.
We haven't seen anyone else, for obvious reasons.
It is still raining.
Nevertheless, we really enjoyed this hike.

Whether it’s the climb up the old railway line or the descent towards the Aulne
it’s a lovely walk. It’s a shame the salmon viewing area wasn’t accessible.

A wonderful walk, of course, along the banks of the Aulne, but also through areas we’d never seen before. The site of the Notre Dame chapel is unusual and stunning. We made the most of being ‘perched’ up there to explore the ‘Vieux Bourg’ right next door, with its riding school. I highly recommend this route.
