Col des Saints route

A very beautiful hike where you will find a dolmen and a menhir statue, flower-lined paths, and views of the Murat countryside, Camarès and the slopes of Espinouse.
Part of this route follows the ancient Roman road which became the Via Tolosana in the Middle Ages, the route from Arles to Santiago de Compostela.

Description of the walk

The starting point is the car park of the church in the village of Murat-sur-Vèbre.

(S/E) From Saint-Étienne Church, follow the D162 road to the left for 100 metres, then turn right up a small grassy path until you reach a tarmac road.

(1) Continue straight ahead along the grassy path until you reach a road, turn left, cross the bridge over the Vèbre, cross the D162 and reach the hamlet of Candoubre.

(2) At the cross in the centre of the hamlet, turn left. At the second cross, take the path on the right which leads into the forest after the last farm.

(3) When you reach a tarmac road, take the track opposite, cross the pine forest (statue-menhir) and continue straight ahead, ignoring the tracks on either side.

(4) At the foot of the wind turbine, take the second track on the right (be careful not to take the track immediately on the right at the edge of the woods, but at the foot of the wind turbine) signpost. Continue straight ahead along the beautiful flower-lined track (here in July).

(5) At the large crossroads, follow the track that climbs to the left and continue to the next crossroads. Turn left and pass at the foot of the wind turbines on your right.

(6) At the crossroads, turn left and a few metres further on, between a transformer and a cross, continue straight ahead.

(7) At the crossroads, ignore the two paths on the left that are blocked by barriers and go straight ahead, crossing the barrier (private property) and continuing through the pine forest. After 500 metres, take the track on the left, cross the barrier and continue through the conifers.

(8) You will arrive at the junction with the Saint-Jacques path (GR®653). Take this path on the left and follow it. At the tarmac road, continue straight ahead, cross the Col de Garenne and descend to the hamlet of Senausses.

(9) At the edge of the hamlet, leave theGR®653and take the path on the left above the houses. Continue for about 100 metres and then turn right.

(10) Near a farm building (covered with solar panels), take the path that climbs left into a beech forest. Continue straight ahead and at the next crossroads follow the path on the right (not marked on the map). Pass the Ruisseau de Merle stream, then above a house on the right, and continue straight ahead on a stony track.

(11) At the Col de Bouyssou crossroads, at the edge of the forest, continue straight ahead. The path runs alongside a meadow then enters the woods, leaving a path on the right. It then turns left (viewpoint over Murat) and joins a tarmac road. Ignore this and follow the track on the right.

(12) At the entrance to the housing estate (do not enter), turn left for 100 metres then turn right. After the large stone wall, turn left onto the Saint-Jacques path (GR®653). Cross a wooden bridge and continue straight ahead towards La Salvetat.

(13) At the sewage treatment plant, leave theGR® and turn right. Cross the Vèbre bridge, pass a turning on the right, then continue left along the cemetery to return to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

After the village of Candoubre (2), on the way up, make a detour into the forest to see the Castel Sec dolmen.
Between points (3) and (4), you will see the menhir statue on your path.
Just after point (6), there is a pretty wooden cross on the right.
You will pass through beautiful pine forests and magnificent beech woods.
Splendid flower-lined paths (in July), raspberry and strawberry bushes galore, a real treat...!

The expansion of the wind farm has completely destroyed the trail over many kilometres.
We sometimes find ourselves walking on a road 10 to 15 metres wide, not to mention the numerous earthworks areas as big as a football pitch (with lots of machinery).
We don't go hiking in the forest to come across construction sites like this.
We'll have to wait until the work is finished and hope that the area will be restored...
Otherwise, the parts of the path that have not been affected are very pretty.
We did the route with a GPS, so fortunately there were no problems, as the markings seem to have disappeared at some junctions.

A very beautiful hike, as usual, thanks to the Visorando geolocation app.
In addition, for safety reasons, we always send the route to our children so that they can follow us in real time.
We did indeed pass through a wind farm, but it didn't bother us too much.

Highly recommended.

A rejuvenating and deeply soothing walk, even if at times the distinctive sound of The War of the Worlds whistled in our ears.
The wind farm is huge and, unfortunately, the route cannot avoid it. But by focusing on our feet, we manage to ignore it and the Compostela is there to bring us back to serenity.
The landscapes of Muratais are simply magnificent and the forests sublime.
This walk can be done in summer as there is plenty of shade.
Keep the description with you as the path is full of tracks and it is sometimes difficult to find your bearings.
Do not hesitate to go to the dolmen just after Candoubre (between points 2 and 3). A sign indicates a 20-minute round trip. It is a place full of serenity with a beautiful view of Murat.

Superb walk.
Long, but that was to be expected!
As for the route: there are specific markings all along the way. This path is actually more pleasant than some sections of the GR, which follows paved roads.
We had difficulty crossing the Merle stream (it had rained heavily in the previous days). But otherwise, it was pure bliss, with beautiful landscapes, diverse forest environments (magnificent pine and beech forests) and autumn-coloured undergrowth, wind turbines, a drovers' road (a real one with sheep droppings!), meadows and chestnut trees, and lots of mushrooms (but it was the season for them).
As for the wind turbines, they seem to have been completed and the tracks have regained their calm. In the first part (near the dolmen), the large tracks have almost disappeared.
Nothing to complain about: superb and a real change of scenery!

The only downside to the route is the time spent walking near the wind turbines... and on the tracks built to install them... But we do need to develop green energy... I am aware of my contradictions!
Otherwise, before and after the wind turbines, there are some magnificent stretches of the route! And you can do this hike even in hot weather thanks to the altitude!

Very informative guidebook, but as mentioned, the trail is well marked. Moderate interest as you are almost always in the forest without many views. Note the view of the Pyrenees and Pic de Nore from the dolmen statue on the climb. However, the clearing machines have ruined this part of the trail. I was also very lucky to see a dozen deer just after the junction with the GR. They didn't hear me coming and I was able to watch them for several minutes. The indicated duration is a little long.

Thank you, randonneuse81
That should work. You downloaded the GPX track to your GPS and your progress isn't following the track, is that right? Or is it a problem with the coordinate units?

Good evening

Great hike! Beautiful autumn scenery!
However, the GPS coordinates do not match ours on the Garmin. Why is that?

Our GPS is working perfectly.

Kind regards
