The Maison de Peyrac - Lacaune

This final stage takes place, for the most part, in the undergrowth, on wide paths lined with wild strawberries and various fruit bushes.
The path winds its way up and down until it reaches the foot of the Roc de Montalet.
From there, it is the final descent towards Lacaune.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: A journey of discovery through the Monts de Lacaune

Description of the walk

Maison de Payrac.

(S) With your back to the lodge, go round the buildings and find the yellow-marked path. Pass in front of some wooden educational structures. Descend to a Y-junction, where there are two yellow markings.

(1) Head diagonally left and continue the descent to the 892m mark. Ignore the path branching off to the right and carry on towards the cluster of houses, without actually reaching them.

(2) Cut left, ignoring the barriers. At the clearing, continue straight ahead towards the ‘No Entry’ sign. Follow the track to its end.

(3) Turn sharply right. At the T-junction, turn left. Cross an open area and then, further on, at the edge of the woods, make sure you close the gate properly. You will come across the yellow markings of the Montalet PR® at the end of the descent in the clearing.

(4) Continue downhill to the Ruisseau de la Grande Vergne stream and cross it. Head back up and find a path branching off to the right.

(5) Turn right. Follow the yellow markings to reach the Chemin de Montalet. Follow it to the left to reach the track on the right.

(6) Turn right. Ignore the path immediately on the left, which climbs to Montalet, and continue along the track. Stay on the wide track that goes round the rock and ends at the road in front of Doucet.

(7) On the Montalet road, head towards Les Vidals. Take a detour into the village to have a look around. After exploring, return to the Route de Lacaune. Walk until you reach a path leading down to the right.

(8) Take the path. Head down towards Gandilhou, passing under high-voltage power lines. Go past the hamlet without entering it. The path ends at a road.

(9) Turn right. At the roundabout, head left. Enter and leave Thioys. On Avenue de Montalet, turn right towards the slender metal cross.

(10) In front of the cross, turn onto the gravel path and immediately continue along the path lined with holly on the right. On the wide path, turn right and then right again at the next junction.

(11) At this bend, before Le Gourp, take a dirt track on the left. You’ll reach the entrance to Lacaune, Rue Al Tournal, then Rue Flandre Dunkerque.
Head slightly left to join Rue du Callaret, which you follow to the right. Continue along Rue André Théron.

(12) Take Rue de la République on the left. You will come to the church and its car park (E).

Worth a visit

The Roc du Montalet is the subject of another hike.

It is worth taking a stroll through the village of Vidals to see the unusual exterior architecture of the Church of Saint-Pierre de Les Vidals
This village is the centre of production for many of the so-called Lacaune charcuterie products.

The Pierre Plantée, a menhir-statue in Lacaune, the upper part of which has been rounded off and which depicts a human figure.

After a good night’s sleep at the Peyrac refuge, where we were the only ones there (€12 per person per night, plus a 75-cent tax). There’s no electricity, so bring a sleeping bag. (Not open all year round)
We enjoyed the hike to Montalet, with its beautiful scenery and long descent to Lacaune.
