The Smugglers’ Route in Ohain

Start at Ohain Town Hall.

(S/E) Leave Place du Maréchal Foch and head towards the church. At the foot of the church, turn right onto the D83. After about a hundred metres, let the D83 curve slightly to the left and continue straight ahead. At the three-way junction, go straight on.

(1) At a small pond, turn right onto Chemin de la Baraque, a tarmac road that turns to a stony track. Ignore a path on the right (Chemin du Noir Pilat) and go straight on (panoramic view of the countryside). At the end of the path, cross the railway line

(2) Then follow the only possible path, which turns to the right, the Chemin du lavoir. Cross the Helpe Majeure and continue along the path, which is now called Le Fond Bouret

(3) At the junction with Rue Mandenne, continue straight on along Chemin des Culées. At the end, take the first path on the right, Chemin de Hututu. Cross the railway line again and continue along the forest path.

(4) About a hundred metres before the road, take the first forest path on the left at a sharp angle to stay in the undergrowth.

(5) At the three-way junction, follow the stony track on the right, the Chemin de la Réserve, and keep heading north-west. At the end of the track, turn right onto the Chemin du Pont Baudet.

(6) After about a hundred metres, and before a gate and the bridge over the stream, turn left. Ignore the paths to the right and left (follow the markings carefully) and continue along the edge of the forest.

(7) Pass the Pont Servoise on your right and take the path on the left. You are still in the woodland and are walking alongside the Dardennes stream.

(8) At the junction with Chemin des Mineurs, continue straight ahead. Cross a stream and head up towards a road.

(9) Then turn right and cross the Ruisseau de la Fontaine. At the junction, take the second left, Rue Neuve. At the roundabout, take the second right, Rue des Quarante. After about 200m, the street turns left and, another 200m further on, left again, onto Rue de l'Alouette.

(10) At the end of the street, turn right into Rue Neuve. Go straight on, ignoring two streets on the left. At the three-way junction, turn left.

(11) At the T-junction, follow Rue de Momignies to the left (labelled as such on the OSM map but Rue Charles Hanoteau on the IGN map). Pass Rue de l'Hospice on your right and head towards Place du Maréchal Foch and the town hall (S/E).

In wet weather, wear waterproof shoes.
