Anor Forges Route

A wonderfully varied family route.
Forest paths, small country lanes and paths along the edges of ponds form the backbone of this route.

Description of the walk

Park in front of the church.

(S/E) Anor “La Malterie” (opposite the fire station), near Café Rando Nord “L’Elysée” on Rue du Général De Gaulle.
Follow theGR® de Pays marked in red and yellow. Walk down Rue du Général de Gaulle then Rue Georges Clemenceau, cross the bridge and turn left towards Rue Fostier Bayard, then first turn left then right to take Rue de la Papeterie to the Vieille Verrerie.

(1) Turn right onto the path that descends between the hedges and crosses the stream, the Eau
d’Anor via a footbridge. At the edge of the path, you’ll find the beautiful Notre-Dame de Lourdes Chapel, built of blue stone. Follow the path until you reach the railway line.

(2) Viewpoint overlooking the river and the village. Continue left until you reach the Milourd level crossing.

(3) Turn left, enter the woods and follow the forest path down to the Étang de Milourd. Covering an area of 3 hectares, it was created to serve the forges; today it is a popular fishing spot.

(4) Cross the road and head straight on to cross the redeveloped factory site. At the end, leave the site and turn right; the River Oise flows below the path.

(5) After the footbridge over the Oise, take the Route du Maka (the ‘maka’ is a small water-powered hammer). You are now in the private forest of Hirson: access to the undergrowth is strictly prohibited.

(6) At the end of the forest track, turn left onto Rue de la Lobiette or Rue de la Neuve Forge and follow it to the pond.

(7) At La Neuve Forge, the pond (private property) is nestled amongst the woods and hedgerows. On your left, the Chapel of the Holy Spirit (prayed to for success in exams) overlooks the waterfall.
Walk up the road with views over the Oise valley. At the top of the hill, turn left.

(8) Turn left twice, then turn left into the Bois de la Fontaine à Baille. The forest path descends and then runs along the hillside, passing the curious Chapel of Notre-Dame de Bon Secours and the embankment of an old pond (views of the Rie de Bon Feu). It continues to the edge of the woods.

(9) As soon as you emerge from the trees, head up the tarmac road to the right, then, at the next junction, continue straight on.

(10) Follow Rue Victor Delloue to the left, passing a chapel on your left, then turn left again and head down towards the Vieille Verrerie.

(1) Turn right onto theGR® de Pays on Rue de la Papeterie.
When you reach Rue Fostier Bayard, first turn right then left. At the end of the street, turn right onto Rue Georges Clemenceau, which then becomes Rue du Général De Gaulle, and you will return to the starting point (S/E).

Between (1) and (2): Notre-Dame de Lourdes Chapel. This chapel was built in 1951 in gratitude for the fact that Anor had been spared the ravages of war

Please note that the Café Rando at the start of the route has changed its name. It is now called the Elysée. A very warm welcome;

A pleasant route as it’s quite varied (woodland, tarmac – perhaps a bit too much… – and hedgerow countryside) and quite popular with walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders… You pass along the water’s edge and through the forest (on roads), and there are spots where you can enjoy a peaceful picnic.
You see a few beautiful traditional farmhouses. There’s a decent amount of elevation gain.
On the way back, we just did a circular route through Anor instead of heading back from 1 to the start/finish.
Very well signposted; yesterday we met a lady and a gentleman who were repainting the signs!

A very well-signposted route.
A lovely, varied walk (woods, plains, etc.). A bit too much tarmac for my liking!
Thanks.
