Route d'Issenheim découverte

Issenheim is a small town with a population of 3,000. It was formerly known for the Gast spinning mill. This mill was one of the largest in the region and processed wool into yarn. It is also the starting point for this walk. The first part runs along the banks of the Lauch, passing Villa Spetz and Saint-André Church. The return journey is via Rue de Guebwiller, passing in front of the chapel of the former Antonine convent of Saint-Joseph.

Description of the walk

Park in the Centre car park, between the war memorial and the former Gast spinning mill.

(S/E) After admiring the war memorial and the former spinning mill building, take the car park exit and turn right at the roundabout onto Rue de Cernay. Take the first right onto Rue des Pins and drive past the Champagnat institution. At the end of the street, turn right onto Rue de Rouffach and you will arrive at Square Georges Spetz, just after the Lauch bridge.

(1) Walk along the right-hand side of the square, then pass the information panel about Villa Spetz. At the bend, continue to the right to walk past the plane trees and in front of the villa. Stay along the Lauch river until you reach the bridge. Turn right onto Rue Ostein to cross the river and continue left to reach a picnic area with a sports field and the entrance to a cave with a closed door.

(2) Return to Square Georges Spetz via the same route.

(1) Continue straight ahead on Rue des Écoles to reach Saint-André Church.

(3) After visiting the church, take the passage on the left, enter the cemetery and then turn left to exit. Then follow Rue Pfleck on the right. Continue to the cross at the end of the street.

(4) Turn back until you reach the banks of the Lauch. Walk up to the right along the river, taking Promenade Auguste Biecheler. At the road, turn left and continue to the roundabout.

(5) Continue left onto Rue de Guebwiller. At the next roundabout, go straight ahead and continue until you pass the chapel of the former Antonine convent of Saint-Joseph, now Maison Saint-Michel.

(6) Go down the street until you reach the town hall square. Just to the left of the square is a painting on a building, the town hall, and a stele.

(7) Then return to the street and go down to the left to return to the starting point, continuing straight ahead at the roundabout (S/E).
