Chemin du Puits

(S/E) From the Champ de Foire car park, opposite the cedars and the school, cross the main road (D104) using the pedestrian crossing.
In front of the school, turn left behind the cedar tree, following the fence. Turn right at the corner of the school and follow the dead-end path downhill.
In the fire station courtyard, turn left, go down the grassy path from the playground, continue across this area towards the fence, until you reach the chicane on the left. Take this, turn left onto the tarmac road then right until the next junction.
There, take the path on the left to the next crossroads. Before reaching the hamlet of Vellery, turn right onto the path.

(1) Walk past the well on your left (read the short true story in the ‘Nearby’ section).
Head into the woods before reaching the hamlet of La Poterie.

(2) In this village, turn right three times in succession. Cross the tarmac road to take the path. You’ll come to a tarmac road

(3) Turn right. On this road, pass a path on the left, then one on the right.

(4) On a straight stretch of road and before reaching the hamlet of Breuilleron, take the path on the right; the church will be opposite, in the distance.

(5) Head left onto a short stretch of tarmac road. Turn right onto the footpath to join the main road (Route de Clamecy).
At the junction, head straight on towards the church, which you must go round to the left until you reach Route de la Gare; turn left onto this for 20 metres, then turn right onto Rue Hongroise. At the end of this street, turn right. At the Stop sign, turn left, then left again and right to return to the starting point (S/E).

Even on this short route, the sun can be strong. So, wear a hat and sunglasses in bright sunshine. Bring water with you.

Take care when crossing roads.

At the waypoint (1), the Puits de la Mie (there, Mamot, a simpleton from Chauminet, using two walking sticks to get about, leaves his two clogs behind and vanishes. We search for him, we think he’s drowned… it was a prank).
At the crossing point (2), you can leave this walk to extend it slightly by taking route 26 (Vallée des Ânes). The finish point will be the same.
In the village of Etais, take a look at the sundial painted on the south gate of the church.
