Circular route of the Grand and Petit Rougimont rocks and Trois Pierres

I had wanted to hike in this mountain range for a long time, and now I've done it! There were signs prohibiting passage on a previous route, but I didn't really know where to find them, so I set off on an adventure and ended up finding an "authorised passage".
So, under a bright sun, I was able to access these iconic red sandstone rocks and enjoy the exceptional 360° view from the Grand Rougimont viewpoint over the Donon and the Lorraine plateau.
For those who appreciate the iconic natural curiosities of the Northern Vosges, don't hesitate to visit the Trois Pierres and Petit Rougimont: they are well worth the detour in a magnificent forest setting!

Description of the walk

Given the restrictions on access, set off from the Kiboki inn on the D993 towards Donon. Parking is available near the inn.

(S/E) Passage is prohibited 150 m north of the inn towards Ru des Dames on the Kiboki trail. Head in the opposite direction on the grassy and damp trail along the Sarre Blanche towards Donon. After about 600 m, you will reach an intersection.

Croix Bleue

(1) Turn right onto the wide, stony path of Basse du Houzard, which climbs steadily and seems to go on forever, to join the Grand Chemin d'Allemagne.

Red Cross

(2) Continue to the right, towards Grand Rougimont, for about 250 metres.

Yellow Cross

(3) Climb up to the left, following the marked Grand Rougimont trail. Take the time to observe the lower part of this enormous rock, which is fractured in several places.

(4) Take the stone staircase to reach the summit, crossing the fractured blocks (small metal bridge to reach the end of the viewpoint). Exceptional view of the surrounding area.

(5) Retrace your steps.

Green rectangleGR®533

(4) Begin the descent via theGR®533. Descend to the left via a slightly steep forest path until you reach the junction with the forest track. Continue to the right on flat ground until you reach the next intersection on the right.

Red Cross

(6) Follow the sign for "Grand Rougimont" to the right and walk about 200 metres to the crossroads.

Red Triangle

(7) Turn left, following the sign for "Les Trois Pierres" and take the forest path heading due north. You will reach a deforested area in the large bend.

(8) After about 80 m, turn right onto a narrow path that climbs slightly, heading north.
Please note: the path is not easily visible or well marked (there are no signs, although two other paths are clearly visible upstream and downstream). After about 200 m, you will reach the beautiful and remarkable rock formation known as Les Trois Pierres. Walk around it.

(9) Retrace your steps.

(8) Continue to the right, west, to reach the junction with theGR®533.

Red disc

(10) Climb up the slope opposite to Petit Rougimont.

(11) Retrace your steps after going around it (accessible summit of no interest). Return to the intersection with theGR®533.

Green RectangleGR®533

(10) Continue to the left. Continue along the wide, open forest path towards the Maison Forestière du Gros Chêne. About 150 m before reaching it, look for a grassy path on the right.

(12) Follow this path, which winds through the undergrowth, down into the Blanc Rupt valley until you reach the junction with the forest path known as "Basse du Ru des Dames". Take care when crossing the stream: the banks are slippery.

(13) Turn left onto the wide forest track to join the wide Kiboki forest track in the bend. Return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

No entry: "Private property, no trespassing except for authorised persons" is what you can read near the barrier blocking the Kiboki path 100 m north of the inn of the same name.

I did not come across any picnic areas in these areas, and the only shelters I saw were in the few cavities in the rocks of Grand and Petit Rougimont.

Worth a visit

The Grand and Petit Rougimont rocks.

The Three Stones Rocks.

The White Sarre.

The site of the Kiboki inn.

A very beautiful hike. We didn't see anyone else...
Long climb up to Grand Rougimont, but the view is definitely worth it 😅
A few sections were a bit difficult because there is currently forestry work going on with fir trees being cut down and machinery passing through.

A superb hike.

I did it backwards so that my dog could have access to a stream during the hottest part of the day.
The route is very easy to follow, even in reverse.
The sites of Petit Rougimont and Trois Pierres are superb, but ending up at Grand Rougimont...
The icing on the cake!

A very beautiful hike with wide forest trails. The Grand Rougimont is magnificent, with a superb 360-degree view from the top of the rocks. The Three Stones and the Petit Rougimont are also magnificent rocks. I highly recommend it.

A very pleasant walk, mainly on forest tracks, where you'll find a bench with a magnificent view for your lunch break. The descent from Grand Rougimont can be slippery, so be careful...

A very beautiful hike, with a magnificent view from the summit of Grand Rougimont if you take the trouble to climb to the top.
The other stones and rocks are also worth seeing.
Be careful if you are following the route using only the app, as there is little or no network coverage at the start and end of the route.
The forest is splendid.
