From the Col de Roule Bacon to Grand Rougimont

A beautiful hike through the Vosges forests, on the border of three departments (Bas-Rhin, Moselle and Meurthe-et-Moselle). Pass along the Roman road and the former border from 1871 to 1918, then on to Grand Rougimont (622m), the highest point in Meurthe-et-Moselle. Descend to the ruins of Moises and return along the Saussenrupt stream via the Trou Marmot.

Description of the walk

Go to Raon-sur-Plaine (Vosges) then cross Raon-Lès-Leau (Meurthe et Moselle) towards the Col de Roule Bacon. Park at the pass.

(S/E) Take the Roman road, marked with a Red Cross, towards Les Auges de Martimont. A few hundred metres from the start, on the Roman road, you will find a rock engraved by a German soldier.

(1) Do not turn left, but continue straight on towards Grand Rougimont (Red Cross and Yellow Cross). This is the Grand Chemin d'Allemagne. You will regularly come across boundary markers from this former border along the route. The markers are painted white at the top, sometimes with the letters F (France) and D (Germany) still visible, although the latter has been erased (chiselled away). Ignore a path on the right marked with a blue cross. Continue for about 300 metres.

(2) Turn left towards Grand Rougimont for a fairly steep 200m climb to a magnificent rocky promontory with sweeping views from the Dabo rock to the Donon, passing over the Lorraine plateau.

(3) Descend towards the ruins of Moises (green rectangle, yellow cross) via a narrow and slightly steep path.

(4) At the ruins of a building, follow the forest road to the left towards Trou Marmot, climbing up the bed of the Sausserupt.

(5) Trou Marmot, the ruins of an old sawmill which served as a command post for the37th Infantry Regiment in June 1940. Continue straight ahead on the same path, following the stream on the left.

(6) Return to the pass by taking a small steep path on the left (yellow cross) which leads back to the main path from Allemagne.
Do not continue straight ahead (the old path marked with a yellow circle on the maps no longer exists).

(1) Turn right and return via the Roman road (red and yellow cross) to the Col de Roule Bacon (S/E).

A promising walk... beautiful scenery, a very pleasant stroll along the Roman road.
To enjoy the view at Grand Rougimont, you need to head up to the right (a few steps) to a large sandstone platform where you will find the "Grand Rougimont" sign.
Unfortunately, from point 6 onwards, things take a turn for the worse (we can "thank" the work of certain foresters): paths torn up by machinery, trees felled long ago, lying across the paths, the worst being at the top of the plateau (near point 1), where there is a clearly old clear-cut area, resulting in a lunar landscape and the destruction of all the signposts on this section. Similarly, a sign indicating "sustainably managed and certified forest" is perplexing! To find the route, you have to stay on this desolate path.
Furthermore, the distance of the route seems to be somewhat underestimated.

Very beautiful hike in the first part... We managed to find the path to Marmot Hole... but it was a very steep little path... Nevertheless, we had a great day.

A hike to be repeated...

The first part of the hike was very pleasant: we explored the beautiful Roman road and Grand Rougimont, where we spent a long time enjoying the magnificent view.
The route was straightforward until we reached Trou Marmot! Yes, we continued straight ahead, following the stream, and walked a good kilometre before realising our mistake. So we turned back! Ah, you had to see that little yellow cross marker high up on a tree and the very steep path it took us on, which looked a bit like a wild animal trail! We didn't have the map with us, which was a mistake, even though it's clearly noted in the description!
All in all, a lovely walk in the forest! Thank you for this hike!

The signposting (yellow crosses) and maintenance of the trail between Trou Marmot and the return to the Roman road has been somewhat neglected, so you need to follow your map or GPS carefully, as we did!

A pleasant and historic route. In your description, points 5 and 6 need a little more explanation.
"After Trou Marmot, continue along the road until you reach the path on the left. Turn left here and after about 50 metres on the left, you will see a small "marked" path that climbs but is not very visible and not easy to access". Furthermore, when you reach the top after this steep climb, there are no markings or landmarks. The end of the route is not very pleasant, but it will leave you with memories.

Hello, hike done on Saturday. The advantage in these troubled times is that we only encountered a small group on the way back. Superb Roman road. We made a mistake at the start and parked two kilometres before the picnic tables.
After 500 metres, my brother went back to find the car and park it at the real starting point... Not too much damage in the forest.
A superb view of the Dabo rock, the Donon, ... at Grand Rougimont. A really nice picnic in the sun.
However, be careful on the way back, as you descend to the bottom of the valley, you have to climb back up at some point, and it's tough going.
We almost missed the small path after the ruins of Trou Marmot, fifty metres away, so keep a close eye on the left.
I'll do it again.
Thank you for this hike.

Hello,

A historically fascinating route that takes you from ancient times to the First and Second World Wars, passing by the "Trou Marmot", a spot we really enjoyed for its coolness beside the stream.

Thank you, Netra, for this route.
