Departure and return to the car park near the Saint-Quirin lake.
(S/E) Take the forest road, marked with a blue disc and yellow ring, eastwards until you reach a junction with a yellow ring trail on the left.
(1) After a fairly steep slope for 200 metres, the trail joins a forest road, which you should take to the right for about 100 metres before turning left. This is a very pleasant trail, which first comes to a crossroads and then continues (yellow ring sign) opposite towards the Croix Guillaume crossroads.
(2) At the crossroads, take the path on the right at a right angle (GR®5red rectangle) which leads to the archaeological site of Croix Guillaume. This site is well worth a visit. There are numerous information panels along the route. Allow about 15 minutes for the visit.
Retrace your steps and follow the red rectangle trail. Go to the "Les Quatre Chemins" crossroads and continue on the forest road opposite until you reach a fork.
(3) At the fork, continue straight ahead on the Belle Roche Bas forest road.
(4) At a bend, take the path on the right (there is a sign at the entrance to the path) to reach the Belle Roche cave. Don't hesitate to take a little jump towards the cave, which offers a magnificent view of the nearby peaks. After visiting the cave, retrace your steps and take the path to reach the platform above it.
As you leave, take the path heading west (red rectangle). Before the pass, take a short detour to the Fontaine de Jules fountain, 300m there and back (sign). Take the path on the left and head back to the Col de Leidenstein.
(5) After the pass, find the path marked with a blue disc. Continue straight ahead. 150m further on, leave the forest road and take the path on the right. You will cross "Le Saveux", a Celtic site where you can discover many traces left by our ancestors as you wander off the path. Stay on this trail, cross a forest road to reach the Grotte des Bacelles, a cave that sheltered young girls from the region during the Thirty Years' War. Continue to the intersection.
(6) Grotte des Bacelles: a cave that sheltered young girls from the region during the Thirty Years' War. Continue to the next intersection.
(7) Follow Saint-Quirin opposite, past the water tower, blue sign. Cross a forest road and continue on the path opposite.
(8) At the water tower on the right, the forest road descends gently towards the lake (S/E).
