Description of the walk

Departure from the Sainte-Thérèse Church car park.

Yellow ring markings

(S/E) Join Rue de l'Église, follow it to the left and join Rue de Saint-Quentin, also following it to the left until you reach Rue de la Chapelle Sainte-Claire. Turn right, cross the Ruisseau de Saint-Quirin and arrive at the Sainte-Claire Chapel.

(1) Continue through the woods, making a U-turn, until you reach a crossroads.

(2) Opposite, follow Route Forestière de la Grand Tranchée for about 300 metres. Turn left and head towards Chapelle Notre-Dame de Lhor.

(3) After visiting the chapel, retrace your steps for about 300 metres, turn right to the south-east and you will come out onto the D96g.

(4) Follow this road to the left for about 200 m, then turn left onto a path which further on turns right and joins the D96g.

Green Ring trail markers

(5) Turn left, reach the D96 and immediately turn left onto the GR®5 to enter Saint-Quirin via the Route de Lorquin, then the Rue du Général Leclerc.

(6) At the intersection of the GR®5 and Chemin des Processions, turn right and continue for 80 metres. Turn left onto Chemin des Processions, which is not signposted, and climb up to the Haute Chapelle.

Yellow ring markings

(7) After the Haute Chapelle, on Chemin des Processions, descend towards the church of Saint-Quirin until you reach Rue de l'Église. Turn left onto this street and continue for 20 metres, then turn right onto Rue de la Garinette and continue for 80 metres, then take the alleyway on the left until you reach Ruisseau de Saint-Quirin.

(8) After crossing the stream, turn left onto the path that runs alongside it to Rue du Général de Gaulle (D96) and follow it to the right to Rue d'Alsace.

(9) Turn right onto this street, walk along the lake and the Saint-Quirin campsite, and continue to the motorhome car park.

(10) Continue straight east on Chemin Forestier de l'Engenthal, cross a stream and arrive at a fork.

(11) Leave the forest road on the left onto a track that climbs slightly and joins the Route Forestière de la Croix Guillaume.

(12) Follow it to the right towards the east in the direction of the archaeological site and Croix Guillaume. Leave the Route Forestière de la Croix Guillaume on the right to visit the Gallo-Roman archaeological site, the highest point of the route and an ideal place for a break.

(13) Retrace your steps to rejoin the Route Forestière de la Croix Guillaume and continue right towards the Croix Guillaume.

(14) Leave the forest road on the left, heading north. Follow the markings carefully as several tracks start from this intersection.

(15) Be careful to turn sharply left towards the south and, after 250 m, turn sharply right towards the north. Continue to the Chapelle des Verriers.

(16) After visiting the chapel, turn around and head south, following Rue de la Chapelle. After about 150 metres, keep to the right, heading south-west then west, and continue to Route Forestière de la Basse du Loup.

(17) Turn right towards the north-east until you reach the bend in this forest road.

(18) Take the path on the right, which curves widely and joins the D96.

(19) Cross it carefully and continue left towards the north-west on the uphill path, cross the Vasperviller Forest Road and continue in the same direction until you reach Vasperviller. Go up Rue de la Verrerie, then Rue des Maréchaux.

A superb circular route, very well signposted and maintained by the Saint-Quirin hiking club (thank you and well done).
In my opinion, there is an opportunity to make use of a shelter not mentioned in the description at point no. 4, about a kilometre past the beautiful chapel of Notre Dame de Lohr, and to stop there for a snack (exactly halfway along the circular route in this case = 8km) if you move the start to the church at Les Verriers de Lettenbach. Whether to do the circular route in the Lettenbach-St Quirin or Lettenbach-Vasperviller direction is up to you. Personally, I would prefer the Lettenbach to Vasperviller direction.
