Description of the walk

Starting point and access: Nézel-Aulnay station.
- Transilien - Line N, on the section between Paris-Montparnasse and Mantes-la-Jolie.
Take exit 2 Rue des Prés Dieu, at the rear of the train on track 1, in the direction from Paris to Mantes. If arriving in the opposite direction, cross the tracks via the passageway at the front of the train (be very careful and obey the traffic lights).

Red and white markings

(S/E) Leaving the station via exit 2, cross the street, leave the level crossing on your left and take Ruelle des Prés Dieu, which soon turns right. At the end, follow Chemin des Prés Villars to the left and, at the fork that appears immediately, turn left onto a path between the fields. Ignore a path coming from the right, join the railway line and follow it on the left-hand side. After an antenna, the path gives way to a tarmac lane. Follow this straight ahead to a roundabout.

(1) Then take thefirst left (be careful, the pavement is narrow). When the street turns right, continue straight ahead, pass a wooden barrier and go under the railway line. On the other side, cross the road at the pedestrian crossing, take the Vieux Chemin de Bazemont opposite and go uphill. At the next crossroads, go straight ahead and rejoin the tarmac road. At the crossroads, take thesecond left, Chemin des Fonds.

(2) After about 100 metres, turn right, still following Chemin des Fonds. The gravel path soon gives way to a grassy path that climbs gently up a small valley (cultivated field on the left). Ignore a grassy path on the left and continue to a T-junction. Turn left, downhill, and cross a stream.

(3) Immediately afterwards, turn right and follow a grassy path slightly uphill. Ignore a path on the left and then one on the right and rejoin the tarmac road. Continue uphill and turn left, then right.

Red and white + yellow + orange markings

(4) You will come to a road. Cross it (with caution) and follow it to the left on the right-hand pavement. When the road turns left, follow a small tarmac road to the right and climb steadily. When the road turns left, take the Chemin du Déluge on the right and leave a tennis court on your left. At the three-way junction that follows, turn left and continue climbing into the forest. This will take you to a crossroads (private property opposite).

Yellow markings

(5) Turn left and go through a metal gate (leaving theGR® trail on your right). Descend gently through the undergrowth and follow a fence on your right. At the T-junction, turn left and descend more steeply. Go through a metal gate and turn right at the corner of a house to reach a T-junction.

(6) Then follow a wide gravel path to the right. At the next intersection, continue straight ahead on Rue des Grands Jardins and rejoin the tarmac road. Come out onto another street and follow it to the right.

(7) Take thefirst left, Rue du Chemin Vert. Continue straight ahead, ignoring the side roads. At the bottom, at a T-junction, turn left between a horse pasture on the left and a hedge on the right. After about 100 metres, take thefirst path on the right. At the next intersection, continue straight ahead on Ruelle de la Maison au Veau. Then cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and go up the hill opposite.

(8) At the next junction, turn left and go downhill. Find the road you crossed earlier and follow it as it continues. When the road turns left, continue straight ahead along Rue des Huguenots and cross a residential area. At the crossroads (wash house), continue straight ahead and up Chemin des Huguenots. At the T-junction, rejoin Rue des Huguenots and follow it to the left. At the end of the tarmac road, continue along a path and you will soon come to a T-junction.

(9) Turn right and climb up into the woods. At the top of the hill, walk along a fence on your right. Take thefirst path on the left (be careful to spot this turn-off). Continue straight ahead between the fields. At the end, follow a small road on the right and walk along the wall of a property on your left. At the corner of the wall, turn left onto a farm track. Pass a large gate and, at the end of the wall, continue straight ahead between the fields. At the end of a right-hand bend, walk along a wood and, just before a long grassy area on the left, look for a path starting on the left (be careful).

No markings

(10) Take this path which leads into the woods.

Yellow markings

At the T-junction, turn left. Ignore the tracks on either side (not shown on the map), turn right onto the marked path and descend to an intersection.

(11) Then turn left and continue on fairly flat ground through the woods. Cross a stream and walk along the remains of a stone wall. Stay on the main path and ignore any vague trails on either side. Cross a tarmac road and continue straight ahead on Chemin des Belles Vues (tarmac). Further on, the tarmac gives way to a gravel path. Cross an area with mobile homes and caravans, continue on a path through the woods and ignore all the paths branching off to the sides.

(12) At the T-junction, turn right and descend along the woods on the left-hand side.

No markings

After about 200 m, turn right onto a grassy path and head towards an electricity pole. Walk along the right-hand side of a horse pasture and then a recently planted vineyard. Continue along the houses on the left-hand side. Leave Place des Paquières on your left and, at the corner of No. 6, turn left down Rue des Cottages.

(13) At the T-junction, follow the road to the left (Route de Montgardé). At the end, at the level crossing, cross the D191 and follow it to the left along a footpath that runs parallel to it. Go straight ahead between the road (on your left) and the railway line (on your right) and you will find Nézel-Aulnay station on your right (S/E).

To return home:
- Transilien - Line N, towards Plaisir-Grignon and Paris-Montparnasse (immediate access) or Mantes-la-Jolie (carefully use the crossing on the left to cross the tracks).

Notes

Train timetables: consult the Transilien website.

For motorists:
Park in the station car park located along the D191. There are two options for starting the hike:
- Go to platform 2 and cross the tracks via the designated crossing to reach exit 2 (be very careful and obey the traffic lights).
- With your back to the station, turn right along the D191. Shortly afterwards, turn right to cross the tracks at the level crossing. Immediately turn left into Ruelle des Prés Dieu and rejoin the main route.

Hiking boots are recommended.

No drinking water points identified along the route.

Alternative route:
At (9), if you wish to avoid the circular route on the cultivated plateau, turn left, descend and quickly rejoin the main route at (12). This shortened version is approximately 9 km long.

A detailed map is useful (at least the one accompanying this description).

Hike completed twice by the author, the first time on 21 March 2010 and the second time on 25 June 2022.

Worth a visit

A pleasant hike through woods, fields and residential areas. There are a few hills, offering some lovely views.

Note that at point 7, we went between two horse pastures rather than just one as indicated in the description. Apparently, this was the right path because we were then able to follow the path as indicated in the description.

However, at point 9, we wanted to go directly to point 12 to make it only 9 km, and that wasn't easy for us, but in the end we found the station, though perhaps not necessarily via the route indicated in the description.
The main thing is that we had a great hike.
Thank you.

A very pleasant hike combining woodland, fields and a few typical buildings: a wash house and some beautiful residences.
It also runs alongside the Mauldre river for a short distance.
The route, with a slight incline, offers lovely views of the surrounding countryside.
