Start at Place du Marché in Maule. If you’re walking on a Sunday (market day), you can park near the “Les 2 scènes” cinema or in front of the Franprix on Chaussée Saint-Vincent, two streets away.
(S/E) Walk down Place du Marché towards the station (south-east) and take Rue du Pressoir. Pass a cul-de-sac on the left, then turn left into Rue Flaville. At the end of the street, turn left onto Rue du Ponceau and follow it for about 150 metres.
(1) Turn right onto Rue des Boutonneries. Turn left where the road bends and, at the T-junction you’ll soon come to, turn left again. At the end of the tarmac, take a small path on the right (walk past the police station on your left). You’ll come out onto Boulevard Paul Barré; cross it and follow it to the right. Keep the station on your left until you reach the foot of a footbridge. Take it to cross the railway tracks.
(2) On the other side of the footbridge, turn right and follow the railway line for 1.5 km towards Mareil-sur-Mauldre. Follow Chemin de la Cressonière then Chemin de Fond Val (slight incline). At the junction with Chemin de la Vallée Renault, continue straight on for about 100 metres.
(3) Turn left onto the Route d'Herbeville (steep climb). When the road bends to the left, continue straight on along the Chemin des Vignes. Walk straight along the edge of the plateau for 1.2 km, ignoring all turn-offs to the right. Cross the Route de Boulémont (cross), continue along the Grande Rue and enter the village of Herbeville. Take the first street on the right (Domaine de la Croix) to reach a small square (fountain, possible rest stop). Continue left via the Ruelle Gallo. Turn left at the next junction.
(4) At the end of the street, rejoin the Grande Rue, follow it to the right and leave the church on your left. Pass the town hall and school, ignore a street on the right and continue straight ahead along the Grande Rue.
(5) At the crossroads, take thesecond right, the Côte de Maule (magnificent view of the valley on the left). Turn immediately left towards the cemetery.
Leave the cemetery on your left and follow a path (sometimes muddy). Climb up and then walk along the edge of the plateau.
(6) At the end, follow the Chemin de Poissy to the left. Keep going straight on and head downhill.
(7) At the bottom, at a junction, turn left onto Chemin de Bazemont. Go straight on (south) through the forest. On emerging, leave Grande Rue on your right and then Voie Grisée on your left.
(8) At the junction, turn right onto Route de Maule.
(9) At the junction with Route d'Herbeville, continue straight on along Avenue Saint-André. When the avenue bends to the right, take the path opposite that leads downhill. At the bottom, turn left onto Chemin de la Cressonnière and you will immediately come to the footbridge you used on the way there.
(2) Cross the railway tracks again and follow the route back via Boulevard Paul Barre and Rue des Boutonneries.
(1) Follow Rue du Ponceau to the left and, taking the reverse route of the outward journey via Rue Flaville and Rue du Pressoir, head back to Place du Marché (S/E).
