Loop east of Auxi-le-Château via the old railway line

This walk allows you to discover the Authie valley on the east side. We pass by the old Auxi-le-Château railway station, which is a fine example of the restoration and conversion of existing heritage. Also worth noting is the small military cemetery, which reminds us of the horrors of war. Finally, enjoy the superb views of the valley and the charming town of Auxi.

Description of the walk

Start from the football field car park, along Rue du Cheval.

(S/E) Head south-west towards the town centre along Rue du Cheval. Follow this street to the end, ignoring any side streets and alleys.

(1) You will come to Rue Albert Vermaelen (D941) and follow it to the left.

(2) Take the first right, Rue Christine. At the end, turn right onto Rue du Général Leclerc (D933) towards Amiens. Stay on this road until you reach the old railway line (information sign).

(3) Turn left onto the old railway line (note the beautiful conversion of the Auxi station).

(4) Cross the Authie via a small bridge. Then cross Chemin du Pont Rouge and continue straight ahead along the old railway line, which runs parallel to the D938 on the left. Ignore a turn-off on the left (elevation 40) and join the D938 (information sign).

(5) Cross the road carefully and continue on the other side along the old railway line. After about 500 m, you will reach Rue de Hoc.

(6) Take this street on the left heading north. Pass a small British military cemetery on the left. Ignore another small road on the right (elevation 89) and then a path on the left.

(7) At the fork, take the left path and head towards the edge of the Bois d'Auxi. Then turn left and follow the path along the edge of the woods. Continue straight ahead until you reach the D941.

(8) Cross the road very carefully and follow it to the left for about 50 metres. Take the first road on the right, Rue de Nœux. Ignore a turning on the left and then one on the right. Turn left with the road and continue to a crossroads.

(9) Go straight ahead on Rue de l'Hermitage and walk along the cemetery on your left, then the Saint-Martin Church (15th-16th century). Cross Rue du Heaume on the left, then Rue du Château on the right and walk past the town hall.

(10) Come out onto Place de l'Hôtel de Ville and turn right to cross it, leaving a car park on your left. Cross Rue Roger Salengro on your right and go over the bridge over the Authie. Go straight ahead, cross Rue du Général Leclerc on your left and return to the intersection you passed at the start of the walk.

(2) Continue straight ahead on Rue Albert Vermaelen.

(1) Take the second right, Rue du Cheval, and follow it to the football ground car park (S/E).
