To get to the start, from Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe towards Les Saisies, reach a wide bend to the right with a platform on the right-hand side. At the entrance to this, turn left towards Les Excoffonières - Plan Désert (lake). Follow the small road to the end and park near Lac de Plan Désert.
(S/E) From the car park, head towards the stream and cross it. Immediately turn right onto the alpine track and after about 2 km you will reach a fork with a grassy path on the left (return path).
(1) Continue along the track, pass the Bouza mountain hut and continue to the Limace mountain hut.
(2) Walk along the edge of the chalet on the right and continue along the track behind it. Follow this track almost in a straight line to reach the Col de la Limace.
(3) At the pass, take the track on the left which goes around a small promontory on the right and reach the Col de Basse Combe. Then start the climb up the ridge and reach a flat area with a trail starting on the left.
(4) Continue along the ridge and reach the summit of Ban Rouge with its orientation table just after the arrival of the chairlift.
(5) After enjoying the view, turn around and return to the nearby plateau.
(4) Take the grassy path on the right at an acute angle. This path quickly becomes visible and passes under the summit of Ban Rouge with a rocky outcrop on the right. After a hairpin bend, it descends into the forest in wide switchbacks. You will reach a fork with a small path on the right.
(6) Ignore the path on the right and continue on the more distinct path, turning sharply left. Go around another hairpin bend and join a grassy forest track.
(7) Turn left and continue downhill. Ignore a path branching off to the right (not shown on the IGN map) and continue along the track until you reach the fork with the mountain pasture track near the Bouza chalet.
(1) Continue downhill along the same path until you reach Lac de Plan Désert (S/E).
