Aux sources de la Canche

A long route that is ideal when the weather is less favourable.
A few small roads (most of which have grass growing in the central reservation), some fairly easy country lanes and a very beautiful section leading down to Le Cauroy.

Description of the walk

Sars-le-Bois, cemetery on Rue du Bois.

(S/E) Join the D 79E1, opposite the church. Turn left onto it and follow for 300 m until you reach the edge of the hamlet

(1) Follow Rue de la Canche to the right. Cross the source of the Canche and head up towards Berlencourt-le Cauroy. Ignore two turn-offs on the right and, after crossing the Canche again, reach a T-junction opposite the church.

(2) Turn left and reach a fork. Continue to the right and reach a junction. Turn left onto the small road (Rue de la Solette) which heads towards Denier, climbing to the top at a fork.

(3) Head right (see practical information) along a path that is occasionally a little difficult and reach the D79E1. Cross it and continue straight ahead on the path; 800 m further on, you will find another path branching off to the right.

(4) Take this path and, further on, follow the bend to the right to reach a small road at the entrance to Liencourt.

(5) Follow it to the left and, 200 m further on, turn right. Reach a T-junction and turn right again. A hundred metres further on, turn left onto a good path and arrive opposite a wood (of which not much remains in May 2026!!!).

(6) Follow this path to the left. Cross the D339 (take care) and continue along the path opposite which runs alongside the Bois du Tabard (which is making a comeback!). You will then reach a small road.

(7) Turn left onto this road and reach a junction. Take the Chemin d’Abbeville on the right towards a wood. Facing the wood, the path turns left and reaches a fork. Take the path on the right towards the wind turbine to reach a T-junction.

(8) Head right towards the arched passage. On leaving the woodland, you’ll find an area that can be very wet at times: take the field on the left if necessary. The path improves from there and joins a road. Take this road on the left towards Sus-St-Léger.

(9) Just before a junction, take a good path on the right. Pass near a farm and reach a small road. Follow it to the right and reach a junction. Continue straight ahead on the GRP® de l'Artois. A lovely path that crosses the Bois de l'Hêtraie and joins the D339.

(10) Cross it (take care) to take the path straight ahead and reach a small road. Continue straight ahead along the path (which isn’t shown on maps and is sometimes difficult) and very quickly reach a small road. Follow it to the left, pass a chapel (and there, you’ll be amazed!) and reach the D79. Cross it to take the small road opposite. After a right-hand bend, then another to the left, you’ll arrive at a T-junction.

(11) Leave this small road and continue straight ahead along the wide Chemin Becquerelle, generally heading north, until you reach the D54E1.

(12) Follow it straight ahead, still heading due north, until you reach the entrance to Magnicourt-sur-Canche, with the town hall on your right and the church on your left.

(13) To the left of the church, take Rue d’En-Bas, ignore a road on the left and reach a fork.

(14) Take the road on the right and, about a hundred metres further on, just past the houses, turn right onto the uphill path (signposted ‘pedestrian path’) which leads into the woods and joins the D54.

(15) At the junction, take thesecond road on the right (house on the corner). The tarmac gives way to a good track which turns right and joins a road.

(16) Follow it to the left to reach the village of Sars-le-Bois. In front of the church, you’ll come to a T-junction. Follow the D79E1 to the right and then quickly left to reach the (S/E).

Notes

Good walking shoes and walking stick(s) recommended

At point (3), the path (and the next one) is very grassy. After a rainy day, to avoid ending the walk with a bathtub on each foot, it may be better to continue along the road. At the junction, take the PR® path that runs alongside Bois Lamont and head for point (4).

There is a car park in front of Magnicourt Town Hall (14). I think you can also start from there.

A lovely walk in fine weather along easy, dry paths. No difficulties. A pretty chapel just past Le Cauroy.
