De la Canche au Bois de Mortagne

An easy start on good paths, then a passage along the Sentier des Culs Trempés (which unfortunately is no longer maintained) before a beautiful climb up to Canettemont.

Description of the walk

Park in the small car park in front of the church in Canettemont.

(S/E) Take the main road south-east to join the D53. Follow it for a few metres in the same direction to reach a three-way junction (Vierge).

(1) Leave the main road and follow the path opposite. At the crossroads (elevation 144), turn right onto the GR®121 (white and red markings) downhill. Pass the chapel and cemetery, then turn left to cross the Canche and join the D339. Follow it for 200 m on the right.

(2) At the crossroads, take Rue du Marais on the right. You will reach the Canche (opposite a closed footbridge), which you follow on the left to reach another footbridge. Cross the stream and continue along it on the left.

(3) Cross the Canche again at the next footbridge (a beautiful footbridge with metal railings) and join the D339. Take the path opposite, slightly to the left.

(4) In the left-hand bend, rejoin the GR® and follow it on the right (a beautiful path with two gates for livestock. Don't forget to close them behind you!).

(5) At the road, turn right onto the departmental road, ignore a street on the right and reach a new T-junction. Turn left, then immediately right onto the path.

(6) At the end of the path (chapel), turn right onto the tarmac road. Ignore a path on the left and, just before reaching the D339, take the grassy path on the left (still GR®). Join the D339 and follow it on the left. Turn into the first street on the left (Rue de Mortagne) and reach a crossroads (calvary).

(7) Turn right to rejoin the D339. Cross it to take the path opposite. Cross the Canche and follow the main path. Ignore the first grassy path on the left (dead end) and reach a three-way junction. Turn left onto the grassy path. After a few metres, there is another three-way junction (not very visible!). See Practical Information. Turn right (this path, which was impassable in July 2025, has been cleared: message from Suricate in January 2026) and follow the correct path (marked Fontaine Bleue path). It eventually climbs up to the edge of the woods (barrier on the right). Continue to the first crossroads (isolated house).

(8) Then turn right to climb up along the Bois de Mortagne ( steep slope at the start) on the western edge and then the northern edge.

(9) At the crossroads, take the hairpin bend to the left (it is also possible to continue straight ahead to reach Canettemont in 15 minutes). Follow the path at the foot of Mont Blanc and reach a three-way junction just before arriving at the cemetery.

(10) Turn right at the eastern edge of the Bois de Gargantua. A steep climb leads to a small road. Follow it to the right.

(11) Take the first path on the right. 800 metres further on (Mont Blanc 130 m..., beautiful viewpoint), turn left and follow the path to the road. Turn right to reach the church of Canettemont (S/E).

Notes

Good shoes and walking stick(s) required.

Turning left, you reach the Gué des Culs Trempés, which unfortunately is no longer maintained (and according to Suricate, it will not be). I crossed the ford in July 2025 by walking on the planks, but still had water up to my mid-shoes (a word of warning to anyone interested!

On 19 May 2023, the ford is impassable, unless you are a champion long jumper: it is very wide and the planks are under ten centimetres of water.
Go and take a look anyway and take the alternative route if the problem persists (the round trip should be less than 200 metres).
It's a shame not to develop such a pleasant passage!

A very varied 2½-hour hike with "a little" elevation gain.
Crossing the ford on planks is no problem, but there wasn't much water...
Beautiful view on the climb between 8 and 9.
The detour between 11 and the finish is not particularly interesting.
A nice addition to the hike: some beautiful views of the northern slope of the Canche Valley

Very good hike, the second part (from the 7th km) is very pleasant with slightly more difficulty than the first part

I returned to this route this morning.
After point 11, the path that branches off to the left is still there. It's even wider than I thought, but it's very overgrown and you have to be careful not to miss it.

The first footbridge after point 2 has sagged a little. It's still holding up well. Let's hope it lasts!!!

Usually there is a vague path between the wheat field and the next field.
But if they've put wheat everywhere...
Did you turn around and go back the way you came?

A beautiful, varied and hilly route. The ford is easy to cross on the planks. The only problem is at the end after point 11, at a place called Mt Blanc, where there is no visible path to the left as indicated. The whole field is planted with wheat and the "right path" is probably covered by it.

I went back to this route this morning.
I took the opportunity to improve (at least I hope so) the description and indicate an alternative route to avoid the ford (which is a bit of a shame...)
i saw four deer, including a very cool one that I was able to film.
And, more unusually, a squirrel that was also quite photogenic.
In short, a beautiful morning!

Hello

There is no longer a footbridge at the ford. Just a few half-submerged, slippery planks, which forced a friend to take off her shoes and roll up her trousers, causing general hilarity

Is the "walkway" for wet bottoms still valid?
It's passages like this (such as the ravine at Noeux-les-Auxi) that I look for on my walks.
It's nice to share them, especially when they are appreciated.

Thank you again to the author of the hike we did yesterday, on a beautiful October day
For lovers of the great outdoors and peace and quiet, it was pure bliss
We only used the route description, which was very well done, but you still need to pay attention to avoid getting lost
I want more hikes like this!
