Start: The tour starts at one of Freiburg’s central landmarks, the Bertoldsbrunnen.
(S) With the monument behind you, walk along “Kaiser-Joseph-Straße” towards Martinstor.
(1) You pass through the Martinstor, one of the two remaining gate towers of Freiburg’s medieval city walls, and shortly afterwards turn left into “Holzmarkt”. At the next junction, turn right into “Luisenstraße”. Follow this road until you reach “Dreisamstraße” and cross it.
(2) Then cross the Dreisam via the Luisen-Steg footbridge. On the other side of the Dreisam, walk straight ahead along “Turnseestraße” until you reach the junction with “Urachstraße”.
(3) Cross this and, on the other side, turn right towards the Klingstein. A sign provides information about the special features of this monolith. Continue on to “Günterstalstraße” and turn left there until you reach the “Holbeinstraße” bus stop.
(4) In the meadow next to the bus stop stands the Holbein Horse, a work by the sculptor Werner Gürtner (see also below under ‘Discoveries’).
To the right of the bus stop, a few steps lead up to “Schauinslandstraße”; go up these steps, cross the road and walk up the path on the other side into the woods.
At the first junction, turn sharply left, keep right at the next fork and turn sharply right at the next opportunity. You are now on the Kybfelsensteig, which climbs steadily towards Kybfelsen (follow the “blue diamond” markings). You cross several paths and then follow the blue diamond to the right.
(5) You reach a junction. First, head a few metres to the left to a viewpoint with a panoramic view over Freiburg. Then walk back and continue uphill along the Kybfelsensteig via switchbacks.
(6) You reach another signposted fork. Here you can leave the Kybfelsensteig to the left and take the bypass over the Brombergkopf. If that seems too strenuous, simply continue along the path (“Blue Diamond”) and you’ll arrive directly at (8)
(7) You walk up the narrow path to the Brombergkopf, at an altitude of 607 m above sea level, cross over it and walk back down the other side.
(8) You reach the Kybfelsensteig again (end of the bypass via the Brombergkopf) and follow it to the left to the Brombergsattel.
At the Brombergsattel, cross the forest track and continue straight ahead on the other side along the narrow path (“Blue Diamond”).
(9) You reach a forest track again at the Rehhagsattel. On your left is a mountain hut (Rehhaghütte) with a rest area and views. You walk past the hut and continue up the narrow path to the right.
(10) You reach the Kybfelsen (820 m a.s.l.), on which a spur castle stood until the 12th century. A few sparse remains are still visible. The view from the rock is particularly spectacular in autumn and winter, when the view is not obscured by leaves. You walk back down the other side of the Kybfelsen (sign: Kybfelsenabstieg) and reach a forest track.
(11) On your left is a hut (Sohlackerhütte) with a rest area. You follow the forest track for a short while and then turn right across the meadow up to the edge of the forest. The path is clearly visible. You continue to follow the ‘Blue Diamond’ sign in the direction of Schauinsland.
(12) You come to a forest track again. Opposite you, you will see a large rock. Walk past it and follow the path up to the left behind it (no signpost).
Your path first crosses a forest track and, a few metres further up, reaches a wider path, which you follow to the left. A few metres further on, your path branches sharply to the right.
(13) You come to a slightly wider path again and continue to the left towards Schauinsland. Then turn right and left again. You are now on the former toboggan run and can once more follow the “Blue Diamond” sign.
(14) At the signpost for “Obere Rodelbahn”, turn right and then left at the next opportunity.
Just a few more metres of ascent and you will have reached the highest point of your hike, the 31-metre-high observation tower on the Schauinsland (1,284 m above sea level).
(15) Opposite the tower, in the right-hand corner of the meadow, your route continues towards the mountain station. After a few metres, you’ll come to a wide path, which you follow to the left. Stay on this path until you reach a playground (on your right), where a narrow path branches off to the right.
(E) Follow this path and finish your hike at the viewing platform of the Schauinslandbahn mountain station.
You can now round off your hike in the mountain station restaurant and then float leisurely down into the valley on Germany’s longest circulating cable car. At the valley station in Horben, take bus number 21, change to tram line 2 in Günterstal, and you’ll return to your starting point, the Bertoldsbrunnen in Freiburg.
