Head to the car park in the centre of Sankt Peter, on Zähringerstrasse (car park near the school).
(S/E) From the car park, head towards Zähringerstrasse and cross it at the Zähringereck bus shelter. Turn left onto Roter Weg and walk 250 metres (follow the ‘Lindenberg’ sign). At the last house, you’ll come to a junction with a path leading off to the left, running alongside the houses.
Yellow Diamond markings
(1) Follow this path until you reach a small hut on the right, in the meadow, about a hundred metres further on. Turn right, passing behind the hut, and cross the pasture on a slight descent. At the bottom of a small valley, you’ll come to a path joining from the right, at a place called Schweighofmühle.
(2) Take the path uphill towards Oberibental. At a three-way junction in the path, some 200 metres further on, turn right, heading slightly downhill. After 100 metres, ignore a path branching off to the right and continue downhill. At the exit of a valley, in a wooded area, you’ll come to a junction with a path branching off to the left.
(3) Ignore this path on the left and carry on straight ahead. The descent becomes steeper until, after just under a kilometre, you reach a small tarmac road at a place called Oberibental.
(4) Turn left towards Hummelhof, following the small road uphill alongside a stream, and arrive at a junction opposite a farm.
No signposting
(5) Leave the road and turn right onto the wide, ascending path after crossing the small bridge. After a 600-metre climb, you’ll come to a road at a farm shelter.
Yellow Diamond markings
(6) Turn left onto the gently ascending road. 500 m further on, after an electricity pylon, you’ll find a small path on the right.
(7) Leave the road and take the path leading uphill along the edge of the forest. 100 metres further on, at a place called Am Zwerigsberg, continue uphill towards Hugswald, following the edge of the forest, ignoring the path branching off to the right. Enter the forest, then ignore a path branching off to the right. Do not stray from the Yellow Diamond markings and, at the top of the climb, you will come to a junction with two wide forest tracks at a place called Hugswald.
(8) Turn left towards Birkweghof, ignoring the paths on the right that lead downhill. Cross the forest, ignoring a path on the right 200 metres further on, and arrive at a junction with a small tarmac road, near a cross.
(9) Turn right onto the road, which climbs slightly. In the distance, on the right, you’ll see the two bell towers of Saint Märgen Monastery. Join the road linking Saint Peter to Saint Märgen at a place called Birkweghof.
(10) Cross the road carefully and set off towards Birkwegeck along the small path to the left of an electricity substation. A few metres further on, by a bench, turn right and follow a holly hedge until you reach a wide path. Take this path uphill and you’ll come to a junction at a place called Birkwegeck.
(11) Ignore the path branching off to the right towards Landfeld and continue along the wide, uphill path. Ignore the paths branching off to the right into the forest and stay at the edge of the woodland. At the top of the climb, stay at the edge of the forest on the wide path which curves to the left. Ignore all the paths branching off to the right. Pass to the right of a small fountain and continue until you reach a wide, carriageable track at a place called Bei der Kapfenkapelle.
Blue Diamond markings
(12) Turn left towards Rotes Kreuz. Superb panoramic views of the Black Forest. Stay on the ridge, ignoring first a path leading down into the pasture, then a path on the right. Pass by the pretty little Kapfenkapelle chapel and arrive at the hamlet of Rotes Kreuz.
Yellow Diamond markings
(13) Ignore the paths on the right leading into the forest and continue along the ridge towards Vogesenkapelle. Join a wide forest track on the left and, a few metres further on, ignore a path leading downhill to the left at the edge of the forest. On leaving the forest, after passing a path on the right, you’ll come to a junction with a tarmac road.
(14) Carry on to the right along the road, ignoring the paths leading into the forest on the right. After 200 m, the road becomes a track suitable for vehicles. 100 m after entering the forest, you’ll reach a junction at a place called Bei der Vogesenkapelle.
(15) Turn left onto a small path towards Vorderwillmen, leaving the wider track behind. Walk past the Vogesenkapelle and continue along the track (do not turn left into the meadow). As you emerge from the forest, the path takes a wide bend through a pasture and heads downhill towards a farm below. Walk past the farm and continue downhill until you reach a tarmac road at a place called Vorderwillmen.
(16) Take the road on the left, heading downhill. 50 metres further down, ignore the road on the right towards Auf der Eck, and continue downhill towards Schmittenbach. 200 metres further on, you’ll find a small path on the left-hand side of the road.
(17) : Don’t miss this: take this path to the left of the road and continue downhill, following the Yellow Diamond. Walk past a house and, 300 m further down, at a wide left-hand bend, you’ll come to a wide track suitable for vehicles; take this track on the left, heading downhill. At the next three-way junction, leave the wide track leading to the houses, then 50 m further on, turn left to reach, after a few dozen metres, a small tarmac road.
(18) Turn right onto the road. When you reach some houses, join a wider road. Continue downhill and, as the road comes out of the bend, after a wooden fence, you’ll find a small path on the left. Take this path and, 50 metres further down, you’ll rejoin the tarmac road at a place called Schmittenbach.
(19) Cross the road carefully and take the path opposite leading towards Sankt Peter. At the bottom of the pasture, after a sign for Fräskante, ignore a path on the left and continue along the tarmac road. A little further down, at a junction by a cross, continue downhill along the road leading off to the right. 100 metres further on, you’ll reach an underpass.
(20) Go through the underpass and continue down the road (do not head towards Jägerhaus). After 500 m, pass the school on the left-hand side of the road; once past the school, look for a small path on the left leading, after a few metres, to the car park in the centre of Sankt Peter, on Zähringerstrasse (near the school) (S/E).
