Description of the walk

Getting there by public transport -> bahn.de

(S/E) The starting point for this walk is on “Münsterplatz” in front of the entrance to Freiburg Cathedral. Walk clockwise around the cathedral, turning left on the opposite side of the entrance portal to reach “Herrenstraße”. Here, turn right, then after a few metres turn left into “Münzgasse” and then right into“Konviktstraße

(1) According to Freiburg Tourism, this is “Freiburg’s most beautiful little alley”. You stroll along “Konviktstraße” until you reach the Schwabentor, one of Freiburg’s two remaining medieval city gates.

(2) Walk through the gate and cross “Schlossbergring” at the traffic lights.

On the other side, you turn into “Augustinerweg”. You walk along this road, past the houses. After the houses, the Gewerbekanal flows to your right.

After a bridge (on the right), the path leads you left into the woods and winds its way uphill (signposted towards Kanonenplatz, yellow diamond).

Ignoring all the turnings, you’ll come to a flight of steps. Once at the top, continue to the left and shortly afterwards you’ll reach the next flight of steps, which leads you up to the left.

At the end of the steps, head left first and then, after a few metres, take a sharp right.

A few more bends further on, you’ll reach a wider path, the “Burghaldenring”. Follow this for a short distance to the right and, shortly afterwards, turn left onto a narrow path. The path continues uphill. At the next junction, keep left again.

(3) You’ll reach an open area, the former Fort Carré. Here you’ll find several black information boards about the history and the buildings on the Schlossberg. First, continue to the right and turn left at the next junction.

(4) You will reach the former entrance to the Upper Castle. There is an information board here too.

A short way back along the path, keep to the right at the fork and walk around the former Fort Carré. Once at the front, continue straight on through the “Obere Communication”, a secured connecting path between Fort Carré and the Salzbüchsle.

(5) This defensive tower is commonly known by this name due to its shape. Unfortunately, only a few remains of the walls are visible.

(6) The route continues, more or less straight ahead, to the Schlossbergturm, a 35-metre-high observation tower that you’ll need to climb on foot. At an altitude of just under 200 metres, it offers a fantastic view over Freiburg and its surroundings.

Coming back down from the tower, you’ll reach a junction. Here, turn right and walk down the Schlossberg towards “Kanonenplatz”. At the next junction, take the second path on the right. The path now winds its way downhill. At the next T-junction, turn left. You’ll reach the “Burghaldenring” again and head left towards Kanonenplatz.

(7) The square offers a fantastic view over the rooftops of the Oberau and Wiehre districts, as well as large parts of the old town.

Follow the path downhill towards Freiburg and pass the Kastaniengarten, a cosy beer garden on the way down into the hustle and bustle of Freiburg’s old town.

Continuing downhill, after the flyover over the "Schlossbergring", you will eventually reach the Schwabentor again.

(2) There, turn right into the street “Oberlinden”, pass the fountain of the same name on your left and walk along “Salzstraße” back towards your starting point.

Opposite the building of the Higher Regional Court of Karlsruhe, the narrow “Augustinergasse” branches off to the right. Turn here; at the end of the alley you’ll reach “Schusterstraße” and turn left. A few metres further on, another narrow alley, the “Kaufhausgässle”, branches off to the right. Walk through this and you’ll reach “Münsterplatz”.

(S/E) Now just take a slight left-hand bend and you’ll be back at the starting point of your walk, right in front of the entrance to Freiburg Cathedral.
