Circular Giesshübel starting from Sankt Ulrich

Car park on the right-hand side of the road at the entrance to Sankt Ulrich.

(S/E) Cross the road and walk up it for about 100 metres. Turn left just before a bus stop. Follow the yellow diamond and the signs for Schweighof / Am Galgenkopf. After 200 metres, ignore a path going up to the right. Continue along the asphalt road and, in a bend, ignore a path on the right towards Heinehof and continue towards Eichbühl/Schweighof. At the three-way junction, at a fork in the road, leave the small road and take a path uphill on the right (yellow diamond markings). A short climb through pastureland before joining a wide path at a place called Eichbühl.

(1) Turn left, following the yellow diamond towards Schweighof/Horben, and ignore the path on the right towards Heinehof/Berglusthaus. Join a wide path coming from the left. Follow it uphill, ignoring a path on the right in a bend, and arrive at a crossroads at the Schweighof inn.

(2). Turn right, following the yellow diamond on the asphalt road towards Paulinhof/Eduardshöhe. After about 50 metres, leave the small road and take a path on the left uphill (yellow diamond). Above the pasture, at a bench, leave the path on the left and continue on the wide path (yellow diamond). At the next intersection, at the edge of a pasture, turn left and leave the path on the right that descends. Pass by a barn and then leave a path on the left. Cross the houses of Paulihof. You will come to an intersection on the left towards Am Galgenkopf. Ignore this and continue towards Gerstenhalm until you reach the main road at a bus stop.

(3) Turn left onto the short, steep asphalt road. After about 100 metres, join a wide path coming from the left at a place called Geiersnest. Follow this path to the right towards Gerstenhalm/Eduardshôhe. After 30 metres, turn left (yellow diamond) and leave the path opposite. At the top of the pasture, you will arrive at a place called Gerstenhalm. There is a superb view of Horben and Freiburg.

(4) Leave the path towards Stockhof/Horben and turn right (yellow diamond) towards Berglusthaus/Eduardshöhe. After walking through the forest, you will come to a car park at Parkplatzgerstenhalm.

(5) Continue straight ahead towards Eckewitti/Eduardshöhe, following the blue diamond. At the next intersection, at a place called "Eckewitti", leave the path on the right towards Berglusthaus and continue straight ahead until you reach a place called Eduardshöhe.

(6) Take the small gravel road towards Kaltwasser/Kohlerhof marked by a blue diamond (signpost for Ferienwohnung Kaltwasserhof). After about 100 metres, you will come to an intersection (bench). Turn right, ignoring the road leading uphill to the left. Pass below the farm and enter the forest on the Kaltwasserweg path. At the first intersection you come to, after a barrier, turn left uphill (sign for Giesshübel "handwritten") and ignore the path on the right going downhill. Continue uphill on the wide path and, in a 180° bend, you will come to an intersection.

(7) Turn left towards Giesshübel/Schauinsland and continue uphill, ignoring a steeply descending path on the left. At the end of the climb, 100 metres after a barrier, you will reach the first intersection. Ignore the path on the left, which joins the road between Horben and Schauinsland, and continue for 20 metres until you reach another intersection.

(8) To stop at the Gieshübel inn (terrace with superb views), continue for 50 metres to the Horben/Schauinsland road and follow this road slightly uphill for 150 metres (with caution) to reach the Giesshübel inn.

(9) Turn around.

(8) At the intersection, turn left onto a wide forest path bordering a meadow lined with fir trees. At a place called Stutz, continue along the edge of the forest, leaving the path that branches off to the left into the meadow. Look for the yellow diamond at the entrance to the forest. After a "rocky" downhill section, you will come to a wide path.

(10) Cross this path and continue down a second downhill section (yellow diamond). Join a path bordering a pasture. Turn right onto this downhill path (yellow diamond). 100 metres further down, leave the wide path that makes a circular loop along the pasture and enter the forest on the right, guided by the yellow diamond. 150 metres further on, you will come to an intersection (bench and crucifix) at a place called Sonnhaldenkreuzle. Continue straight ahead towards Sonnhaldberg/Spielweg and leave the path on the right. At the end of the forest, at a three-way junction, you will arrive at Sonnhalderberg.

(11) Turn right towards Sonnhaldeeck/Kohlerhof and ignore the path on the left leading downhill. After 100 metres, continue towards Kohlerhof, ignoring a path on the left leading up alongside a fence and, a few metres further on, a path branching off to the right towards the forest. The downhill path passes to the left of a power line. You will arrive at Kohlerhof.

(12) Pass in front of Kohlerhof, heading towards Kohlerweg/St Ulrich. Ignore the two paths on the left flanking the inn. 100 metres below Kohlerhof, at a fork, ignore the two paths on the left and turn right towards Bitters/St Ulrich. At the Bittershof farm, you will come to an intersection. Continue downhill on the wide path towards St Ulrich and ignore the path climbing up into the pasture. Go down the small road, pass to the right of a hunting blind and a few metres further down, you will come to an intersection.

(13) Don't miss Leave the small road and turn right (yellow diamond) onto a forest path. 200 metres further down, at a place called Grosse Tanne, leave the path on the right towards Winterberghütte and continue straight ahead downhill towards Gründenwald. After a wide bend and just before a valley, you will come to an intersection.

(14) Don't miss Leave the wide path and take the path downhill to the right. You will come to a wide path on the left towards Gütle/St Ulrich, leaving the stream on your right. At a farm in a place called Gütle, you will come to an intersection.

(15) Do not continue downhill opposite, but turn right and walk slightly uphill. Cross the buildings of the Gûtlehof farm. Cross the pastures following the yellow diamond. Arrive at St Ulrich church. Turn left and walk alongside the fire station just after a bridge to reach the car park (S/E).
