Approach Mont Jovet and the Crête des Étroits via the Pas des Brebis

Heading to Mont Jovet via the Tête du Jarset then the Col du Lac and continuing along the Crête des Étroits remains a classic route in La Plagne. However, this ridge walk puts off hikers prone to vertigo due to a few steep slopes.
The suggested route avoids the difficult sections and allows everyone to admire the mountain accessible via the Pas des Brebis. The return journey offers views of the entire resort.
The length and elevation gain mean this circular route is best suited to experienced hikers.

Description of the walk

The start is at the north gable of the building nicknamed “le Paquebot des Neiges” in Aime la Plagne 2000.

(S/E) Head north, with your back to the building, to pass under the Golf chairlift. The grassy path you take leads onto a wide track facing west and descending for 50 m; pass under a second chairlift, the Roche chairlift.

(1) At the hairpin bend, a path continues westwards. Take this path, ignoring the signpost, which is misleading for anyone who has never followed this route. The path descends through the meadow, then winds through the forest and leads to a forest track near the Chalet des Frasses.

(2) Follow this forest track to the left as it crosses the stream and climb up the opposite slope, heading north, to Les Halles.

(3) Go round this building by turning left onto the forest track heading due south, towards “Mont-Jovet, Alpages Enchantés and Sentier des Alpagistes”.

(4) Continue along the farm track, which curves naturally to the left.
For your information, at this point you will see a path on your right marked "Tête du Jarset", which you should not take as it takes you over the ridges to Mont Jovet.

(5) After two hairpin bends, an unmarked path on your right, with no signposts, climbs up to the Col du Lac. Do not take this path; instead, continue along the farm track to reach the Chalet des Étroits. Pass this chalet and reach the junction with a wide path coming from the left, which you will take on the return journey.

(6) Go straight on to the end of the forest track and take the path on your right, heading west, which leads you to the Pas des Brebis after a fairly steep but short climb. Allow about 20 minutes. Continue west for about a hundred metres then turn left to reach the highest point of the hike.

(7) To the west, you’ll catch a glimpse of the ascent to Mont Jovet, and to the east, you’ll appreciate the narrowness of the Crête des Étroits, aptly named.

Descend to the Pas des Brebis and follow the ascent route back to the junction just before the Chalet des Étroits.

(6) Turn right, heading north-east, to climb up to the Col du Martinet.

(8) Walk left, heading north, to follow the very wide ridge. Pass the Téléski des Crêtes on your right, then the Télésiège du Bécoin, and finally a mountain restaurant-style building. Beautiful view of the resort.

(9) Descend via the ski run along a well-marked path, heading first north then east, until you reach the large Aime la Plagne building. Return to the starting point at the "Paquebot des Neiges" (S/E).

Notes

If you arrive by car at Aime la Plagne: there is a large car park beneath the “Paquebot”, with lift access to the building.
From La Plagne Centre, take the free Telémétro, which arrives at the north gable of the "Paquebot", the starting point of the hike. You can always head towards "La Plagne Centre" at the end of the route.

No known water source along the route.
The cows are out to pasture in summer. You can walk through the herd; they are clearly used to hikers, but keep your distance and move gently.

Information boards explaining alpine farming activities are positioned all along the farm track between (3) and (6). You’ll learn all about summer grazing and its colourful terminology.

Why were (4) and (5) included on this hike?

Firstly, please note that the small map provided by the Tourist Office for reaching Mont Jovet is very rough.
If you feel like taking this alternative route up to Mont Jovet, leave this hike at (4), heading towards Tête du Jarset. The directions on the Tourist Office’s small map take you via (5); the climb is very tough, the path is not signposted at all, and you could easily miss it.

Equipment:
Hiking boots with good grip, walking poles and a bit of courage for the Pas des Brebis (20 mins of gritting your teeth, but nothing too exposed).

GPS: tracking my route on Visorando, which recorded my track, was very useful in helping me spot the errors in the Tourist Office map (which I reported on my return). The first error is at (1) (misleading signpost) and the second at (5) (no signposting, very steep slope).

The return route from Pas des Brebis is often signposted as “La Plagne” or “Stations La Plagne”; be wary, as these directions will take you back to “La Plagne Centre”. Stay on the ridge until you descend via the ski run (which is not very steep) to reach Aime la Plagne.
If you take a wrong turn, return to the car by bus or cable car.

NB: signposts sometimes disappear in the mountain pastures, which is why I’m only mentioning those needed for the return to La Plagne – miraculously intact!!

Worth a visit

The La Plagne Tourist Office provides well-written, small-scale hiking maps, but the drawings are sometimes rough.
There isn’t enough space to describe the many possibilities this resort offers in summer!!
A wide variety of accessible hikes and a wealth of activities (horse riding, cycling, mountain biking, swimming, etc.).

Apart from the unobstructed 360° view at the summit of the Pas des Brebis, this hike has a rather lunar, even gloomy or frightening atmosphere, with monotonous paths.
Without the GPS track to find the right direction at point No. 6, it is difficult to reach the Col du Martinet without going round in circles. Directional signs would be welcome.
The descent is straightforward but takes you through ski facilities.
I rarely comment negatively on routes, but I did not enjoy this hike at all.
I think it would be more suitable for snowshoeing.
Nevertheless, I would like to thank the author, who is in no way responsible for these inconveniences.

We did this circular hike in early June when there was still a bit of snow, but no special equipment was needed (no crampons). Starting from the ski resort, we were worried about walking in the middle of the slopes, but the trail soon entered a forest and a valley surrounded by nature and very peaceful. We came across a few hikers from another valley at the top of Mont Jovet and lots of marmots!

A superb route around La Plagne.
The 360° view from the Col du Bécoin is well worth the effort.
Paradoxically, and following the route, the hike doesn’t require any particular effort.
A manageable distance and a gentle gradient mean you can complete this route without too much trouble.
No nasty surprises and the path is easily passable.
There are two spots where you’ll cross water… but that’s enough.
A superb day out!!!!!

A long hike (10 km, 800 m elevation gain, 5 hours); a great family challenge, involving a circular route up this iconic peak of the Vanoise Tarentaise and offering exceptional scenery. There are numerous routes to reach this beautiful viewpoint: from Bozel Villemartin (1,580 m), ND du Pré (1,850 m), Longefoy Montalbert (1,630 m / 1,980 m at the Fornelet chairlift) or Aime Plagne 2000 (2,090 m), as we chose. The hike begins with… a 20-minute descent to reach the Chalet des Frasses (1,920 m). Another 20 minutes to Plan de la Tignes (2,020 m), before the real ascent via Tête du Jarset (2,271 m, 1 hr 45 mins) and Col du Lac Bovet (2,359 m, 2 hrs 15 mins). More pleasant than the pastoral track, the climb up this narrow path is indeed tough; this beautiful ridge seems endless. But the view is well worth it. A break by the lake is well deserved. Then, you need to pluck up your courage to reach the pass (2,437 m) and finally Mont Jovet (►►2,558 m, 3 hours). The blueberry tart at the refuge will have to wait for another day; the latter is not on our route. The hardest part is done (elevation gain: +670 m); now all that remains is to enjoy the 360° panorama. By Jove! The scenery across the many mountain ranges is magnificent. For a change and to make the route a bit more challenging, we continue via the Crête des Etroits and the Pas des Brebis. No technical difficulties, but you mustn’t be afraid of heights and should be prepared to be impressed by the exposed or ravined sections. We continue along the ridge. The views are ever-changing: at the Col du Bécoin (2,449 m, 3h45), we leave the Bozel/Champagny side. After a final steep climb (below the Roc), we finally descend into the ski area. The ridges leading to the Dos des Frasses (2,279 m, 4h30) allow us to admire a large part of La Plagne, comprising 10 ‘villages’. Finally, we descend to the ‘Paquebot des Neiges’. An architecture that may shock, a concept and a stance clearly on display: collective, dense and functional leisure (building listed as “20th-Century Heritage” in 2009, “Remarkable Contemporary Architecture” in 2016).
