Mont Jovet as a long loop via the Belvédère de Grande Roche

Hike on the southern slope of Mont Jovet in a fairly wide loop, passing by the Belvédère de Grande Roche. The first part is in a shaded area in the Bois de la Cour, then the Bois des Roches. The route includes a slightly exposed section on the ridge of Mont Jovet. The return journey is on the other side, along a stream where you can stop to cool off. The entire hike offers a succession of varied panoramic views between the Tarentaise and Haute-Tarentaise valleys.

Description of the walk

Access the hamlet of La Cour from Bozel via a road suitable for vehicles, passing through Villemartin. Park in the car park at the northern exit of the hamlet.

(S/E) From the car park, take the road south for about 150 m to the centre of the hamlet.

(1) Take a well-marked path on the right, heading west and marked "Mont Jovet par le Bois de la Cour 3h30". The path crosses the Bois de la Cour and joins a forest road. Follow it to the right for about 150 m.

(2) Sign for Mont Jovet: leave the forest road and climb up the steep slope on the left into the Bois de la Cour.

(3) Fork: the path on the right leads to Mont Jovet, while the one on the left leads to the Belvédère de Grande Roche. Take the path on the left. This path overlooks the Bois des Roches.

(4) Viewpoint with a wide view of the Tarentaire valley and the Courchevel ski area. Continue along the path, which narrows to a trail at this point. Join a well-marked trail.

(5) Follow it to the right. Further on, rejoin the path you left at (3).

(6) Follow it to the left, heading north, to reach a grassy area, then an open field with a view of Mont Jovet and, further away, the entire ridge, including the Bécoin. The trail passes under the Dou du Sublet and then joins the access road to the Refuge du Mont Jovet.

(7) You can either turn left and stay on the road or, as shown on this route, take the path climbing up to the right above the road. Both options are equivalent and converge at the refuge.

(8) You can stop at the Refuge du Jovet: remember to refill your water bottles, as there are no springs before the end of the hike. A well-marked path with a few switchbacks leads to the pass and then to the summit of Mont Jovet. The view quickly becomes panoramic over the Vanoise to the south, the Écrins to the south-west and the Mont Blanc massif to the north, with the Beaufortain in the foreground.

(9) Goal for the day: Mont Jovet. An orientation table shows the peaks in a 360° view. To descend to the Pas des Brebis, continue along the ridge path, which is a bit exposed.

(10) Pas des Brebis: keep right to continue the descent on an easy path heading southwest.

(11) At the fork, leave the path on the right that leads back to the Refuge du Jovet and continue down the path. Join the forest road leading to the Refuge du Mont Jovet.

(12) Follow it to the left for just under 100 m. Leave the forest road and take the easy path on the right. Join the forest road again at the hamlet of Grand Rey.

(13) Continue downhill, following the road to the right for 100 m. Leave the forest road again and follow a path to the right.

(14) Fork: both paths lead to the hamlet of La Cour, but the one on the left is significantly longer. Take the one on the right, which descends rapidly towards the Ruisseau du Jovet and join it.

(15) Opportunity to cool off. Continue along the path which, after about 200 m, joins the road. Follow it to the right to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

There are no technical difficulties on this hike, just a slightly exposed ridge between the summit of Mont Jovet and the pass at the Passage des Brebis. Avoid in case of rain or storms.

The hike is generally well marked and, in any case, the wide visibility allows you to anticipate the trail ahead.

On the descent, you can take the marked trail, which is a significant shortcut, but it is also possible to stay on the Mont Jovet forest road and reach the hamlet of La Cour more gently.

Worth a visit

During the first part (particularly at the Belvédère de la Grande Roche), the Tarentaise Valley dominates, with a wide view of the Courchevel ski area and, further to the left, the Vanoise glaciers and the Grande Casse. In the background, to the south-west, you can see the Écrins, the Meije and the Aiguilles d'Arves.

As soon as you begin the final ascent to Mont Jovet, the entire ridge comes into view (from Dou du Sublet to Roc du Bécoin). On the horizon is Mont Blanc (only 40 km away as the crow flies), as well as the Grand Combin, Mont Pourri and the Sommet de Bellecôte.
Below to the north, you can also see the Vallon des Étroits.

There is another similar hike, but it stays longer on the ridge and therefore has a greater elevation gain = Mont Jovet crossing via the Dou de Moutiers and the Roc du Bécoin.
