Description of the walk

Leave the lodge (S) and cross the village, staying at the top, heading west and following the Way of the Cross to join theGR®58(signposted). Stay on theGR® heading west, then north-west, crossing the hamlet of Malrif.

(1) Continue in this direction to climb up to the Bertins hut.

(2) Begin a steep climb and follow a series of tight hairpin bends to reach the Grand Lac de Malrif, known as Le Grand Laus.

(3) Change direction completely, heading south to begin the descent. To do this, take theGR®58variant (theGR®58at the lake continues north to join the ridge below the Pic de Malrif). Continue the descent, ignoring all paths leading off to the right or left. You will reach the crossroads of the Lombard hamlet path.

(4) Then pass close to the Lombard sheepfold and then the hamlet of Les Eygliers.

(5) Reach the Chalet de la Pause to finally arrive at Aiguilles (E).

The route ends here. You just need to find a way to get back to your vehicle in Château Queyras, 8 km away. But hitchhiking works well here.

Worth a visit

If you still have a few hours or even a few days to spare, you can visit the Roux and Valpreveyre valleys or head up to Molines en Queyras, where you will discover the beautiful fairy chimney called La Demoiselle Coiffée.
You can also visit the hamlets of Pierre Grosse and Fontgillarde which, although not as well known as Saint Véran, have the same type of dwellings which, personally, I find more authentic.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A lovely balcony trail with no difficulties except for the last descent, which is a bit steep. We followed it using GPS. A few mountain bikers and other hikers overtook us.

A tough climb up to Grand Laus, but well worth the effort when you get there. We pushed on to Lake Mézan, which we walked around before joining the GR 58 trail; a short detour that is well worth the effort; the descent is a little tough towards the end. There were few people on this route and we were alone at the lakes. A very beautiful route!

Very beautiful route, steady climb through a wild valley alongside a stream, then stunning views at the lake shore.

A very beautiful hike, completed in 8 hours at our own pace.
Between 2 and 3, it climbs well, as does the descent to Aiguilles from 5.
It's a shame that the rudeness of some people spoils these beautiful landscapes a little: paper, wipes, tin cans and plastic bottles d along the route.

We hitchhiked back to Abriès, thanks to a kind lady from Queyras who picked us up after we waited 3 minutes by the side of the road. People are very helpful in this region.

Leave early because the climb is in the sun.
Magical view of the lake.

After climbing up through Les Villard and Les Bergeries, we rejoined the GR trail at the Bertins footbridge, where there was a huge crowd. There was a long procession all the way to Grand Laus, not to mention the number of people around the lake. We climbed up to the next two lakes, where it was a little quieter. Fortunately, the view was superb. Perhaps it was the COVID effect, but this is not recommended if you want a bit of peace and quiet.
