Long loop starting from Les Roux, taking us to Italy to Lago Verde and its refuge, returning via another pass and another equally pleasant valley and the hamlet of Valpréveyre.

Description of the walk

Park at the entrance to the village of Roux in a small car park.

(S/E) Enter the hamlet and walk through it. At the exit, leave the GR®58 and take a small path on the right. Reach the alpine hamlet of Pré Roubaud.

(1) Continue along the path heading north, then east. You will reach a very short but flat area at a place called Les Bialières. Here you will find a crossroads of paths.

(2) Continue straight ahead, following the Torrent du Col de Saint-Martin on its left bank. Ford the stream to cross to the right bank and stay on the path. Cross several streams to reach Coumbal de Clot Larey, at the foot of Col Vieux.

(3) Here, begin the steep climb up tight switchbacks to reach the top of Col Vieux. Stay on the right-hand path to reach Col Saint-Martin or Col d'Abriés.

(4) Follow the ridge downhill to the south, then due east to cross into Italy and reach Lago Verde and its refuge.

(5) Head south on a small, very steep path leading to Col de Valpréveyre.

(6) Descend on the French side, staying on the paths on the right. In the mountain pasture, you will find the crossroads of the path leading to or from Col de Bouchet.

(7) Continue opposite, leaving the Col de Malaure trail on your left, and you will arrive at the Torrent de Malaure.

(8) Stay on the edge of this torrent, which further on joins the Bouchet torrent. Continue along the edge of the torrent to reach the hamlet of Valpréveyre.

(9) Cross the bridge and the campsite and go up a path parallel to the river that joins the GR®58.

(10) Follow the GR® which crosses the river, pass the cemetery and join the car park at the entrance to Le Roux (S/E).

At point (9), you can enter Le Roux via a pretty, well-marked balcony path that starts at the entrance to Valprévere, climbs 40 metres and then gradually descends to Le Roux. Very pleasant.

Superb hike. The climb up to Col St Martin is absolutely magnificent. A real treat and completely peaceful. Crossing the pass and descending to the Italian refuge does not pose any particular difficulties.
The difficulty lies in the section between the refuge and the Col Valpreveyre: Admittedly, the climb is steep, but we were faced with a very steep snowfield that was too dangerous to cross without crampons. Looking through our binoculars, we spotted a passage on the right as we climbed, marked by small fluorescent flags, which allowed us to bypass the snowfield. But the climb was treacherous, the rocks were unstable... Impossible to cross on the way down, vertiginous on the way up.
Once we crossed the Valpreveyre Pass, the descent on the other side was pure bliss.
In short, this is a hike worth doing, but make sure you check whether or not there is snow on the Italian side before you set off

A very beautiful hike, but unfortunately the view of Italy was spoiled by fog at the Saint-Martin Pass.
Nevertheless, there was a magnificent view of the French Alps and the Viso above the clouds.
We even had the privilege of seeing chamois and ibex.
The section on the forest track at the start of the hike is a bit long.
There is a lack of signposting when you reach the stream.
Stay on the path that goes to the right and do not take the path that goes left towards the stream.
