Description of the walk

In Abriès, leave the RD947 and head towards Le Roux, following the RD441. As you approach the village, park at the bottom, in the car park just before the first bend.

(S/E) From the car park, head up to the village either by following the road or by cutting across the hairpin bends via a steeper path (marked route). At the final bend, leave the road and take a street that climbs quite steeply. Walk through the village, past the Place de l’Église and, shortly after a large building (Chalet des Jeunes), look out for the start of a path on the right.

(1) Follow this path as it winds its way up towards Pré Roubaud and continue to the Oratoire Saint-Joseph.

(2) Continue climbing to the hamlet of Pré Roubaud. Visit the bread oven, the Chapelle Saint-Joseph and the village.

(3) Retrace your steps to the Oratoire Saint-Joseph.

(2) Turn left towards Valpréveyre. Follow the path along the ridge, pass Les Traverses and ignore the path leading to Le Roux. Continue to Valpréveyre. Visit the village, its church with its remarkable bell tower and the chalets.

(4) Return to the village entrance. At the bridge, cross the Torrent de Bouchet.

(5) On the other side, turn right onto a track that descends through the campsite. Follow this track, which climbs slightly, reaches a flat section and joins a crossroads.

(6) Take the track that descends to the right and continue keeping to the right. Join theGR®58, keep descending and ignore the various offshoots. As you approach a footbridge, stay on theGR® until the next crossroads.

(7) Leave theGR® which heads right over the footbridge and take the path that goes left until the next junction.

(8) Turn right onto the path leading downhill, pass in front of the Saint-Barthélemy Chapel and reach the car park (S/E).

Thanks, PIT, for your feedback. And since it’s circular, you can do this one whichever way you like. So you might as well make the most of it
Valpréveyre is changing – that’s life. Have a great hike in Queyras

An easy walk, probably best done in the opposite direction.
The hamlet of Pré Roubaud is very pretty; I was a bit disappointed by Valpreveyre, which I used to know from the 1970s – back then there were only alpine chalets and no holiday homes like there are now: the trail is simply brilliant!

An option for those who fancy a slightly longer walk: from Le Roux, head up to the ruins of the hamlet of La Montette, then head due east, gradually descending towards the stream, cross the footbridge, turn left following the signs for “Pré Roubeau” and follow the route description from (3).

A lovely route along the south-facing balcony path and back through the larch trees. A charming hamlet with its triangular bell tower. For parking, it’s best to use the car park by the ski lift (currently under construction) rather than the circular route in the road. There is no refreshment bar at the Valpreveyre campsite.

A pleasant half-day walk. The hamlet of Pra Roubaud is well worth a visit. In summer, I’d suggest doing the walk in the opposite direction: that way, you avoid the steep climb up to Pra Roubaud in the blazing sun — the climb on the other side is gentler and shaded.
