Start: The starting point is in front of the country inn "Zum grünen Baum"
Getting
- By public transport via Schöllenbach station - rmv.de
(S) Start on Kailbacher Straße heading towards the end of the village. After a few metres, turn left towards the cemetery. The road climbs slightly and takes you past the cemetery to the edge of the forest. The asphalt road turns into a gravel path at a water reservoir.
(1) At the edge of the forest, you will come to a signpost and a covered rest area. Continue straight ahead towards Wagenschwend into the forest. You will come to a fork in the road and take the right-hand path. A wooden sign points you in the direction of Seitzenbuche.
(2) After a few metres, you will see the information board for the Limesturm WP 10/32 on the right-hand side.
Continue along the path until you reach a T-junction. Turn left here and continue straight ahead until you reach another junction. Here, take the narrow path diagonally opposite and turn left after a few metres. In the past, you had to climb over the fence using a ladder. The ladder is still there, but the fence has been knocked down.
(3) Follow the path to the guard post WP 10/33. Next to the information board, you will also see the foundations of the stone tower. WP 10/33 stood at the narrowest point of this ridge. You must climb back over the fence and then turn left, continuing along the narrow path alongside the fence. After a while, you will reach the K3919 district road and cross it with caution.
(4) On the other side, you will find the information board about the Zwing small fort. Opposite the information board, take the narrow path uphill on the right. It is quite steep.
(5) At the next intersection, you will see a section of the reconstructed Limes wall. An information board explains the details.
(6) Continue along the path until you reach the foundations of the Limes tower WP 10/34. Here you are standing at the highest point of the Odenwald Limes at 552 metres.
(7) Continue along the path and after a while you will pass tower site WP 10/35, come to a wider path, follow it to the right and you will reach the K3919 again. Cross this road and walk along the narrow path on the right-hand side.
(8) Next, you will see the foundations of the Limes tower WP 10/36 on your right. Shortly afterwards, you will reach the K3919 district road again. Cross this road and turn left at the L2311/L585 junction.
(9) Cross the L2311 country road and you will see the information board for the Seitzenbuche small fort on the right. Then walk leisurely uphill along the L585.
After a while, you will see a junction on your left. Cross the road here and take the next narrow path on the right. After walking the first few metres along this path, you will see a sign for the Limes Path on your right.
(10) You will come to a crossroads and see the foundations of guard post WP 10/37 on the right-hand side.
(11) The special feature of this site is the reconstructed temple on the other side of the path, which contained a group of statues of three of the deities worshipped here. A replica of these statues stands to the right in front of the foundation walls of the temple.
Pass the temple on your left and after a few metres the path forks. Take the left path, which leads slightly uphill.
After a while, you will come to a crossroads. Continue straight ahead and you will reach a forest path. Follow this to the right, leave the forest and walk straight ahead across the meadow.
At the T-junction, turn left onto the paved path. The path descends slightly. After a while, turn right. The gravel path leads you towards Schloßau. Keep to the right ("Im Fuchseneck") and walk past the buildings until you reach a T-junction.
(12) In front of you is the Schloßau numerus castle, which is unfortunately no longer visible. The information board is on the left-hand side.
Continue walking to the left ("Römerweg") and you will come to the L585 ("Hohe Straße") opposite house number 31. Turn left here and follow this road until you reach the church, then turn right into "Kirchenweg".
The road leads you out of the village and, after a right-hand bend, straight ahead past the shooting club's clubhouse to the K3969 district road. Cross this road with caution, continue on the other side and turn left into the narrow path before a bench.
You will come out of the forest again, walk along a meadow and come to a paved path (there is a white bench on your right). Walk straight ahead to Waldauerbach.
(13) At the T-junction, turn left ("Galmbacher Weg") and continue to the next T-junction. Here, turn right ("Schulstraße"). Follow this road until you reach the last house before the town sign.
Cross the road and walk onto the paved path on the other side. The path now climbs uphill again. At the top, you will pass another seating area and, after the hilltop, the path turns into a gravel farm track.
After a "nursery" for what are presumably Christmas trees, turn left and walk towards the edge of the forest. Pass through the woods and you will come to a paved path again. Continue straight ahead towards Oberscheidental.
(14) You will come to the "Reisenbacher Straße" via the "Auerbacher Weg", turn left there and, at the height of the war memorial, turn right into the "Eberbacher Straße". Leave this road immediately on the left into the "Kastellstraße" and head towards "Römerkastell". After a few metres, you will see a sign for "Römerkastell" on the right, indicating a meadow.
(15) Follow this road and you will come to the reconstructed gate of the Oberscheidental cohort fort.
Cross the meadow and return to Kastellstraße, then turn right and continue towards the sports field. Follow the road to Scheidental. Kastellsstraße becomes Unterscheidentaler Straße.
(16) In the left-hand bend, continue straight ahead ("Oberdorfstraße"), past a pond and up the hill. Walk straight ahead out of the village, pass a solitary fruit tree (on the left) and turn right shortly afterwards.
(17) Follow this road and pass an obelisk standing in a field on the left. You will enter the forest again, pass a crossroads and turn left immediately afterwards.
(18) You can already see the information board for the Limes Tower WP 10/44. With an edge length of 8 metres, this guard post was almost twice as large as the other towers along the Odenwald Limes.
From the tower site, walk back to the main path and continue to the left. At the next fork, turn left (look for a red R for the Roman trail). Keep right at the next two forks and you will come out at the K3922 opposite the Balsbach hiking car park.
(19) There is a shelter on the right-hand side of the car park. Cross the road and continue straight ahead towards Wagenschwend (red R). After a while, turn left ("Fährenweg"). Keep right at the next fork in the path.
In a left-hand bend, you will see a signpost. Follow the red R to the right towards Wagenschwend. The path leads you out of the forest and onto a gravel path.
(20) Here, turn left and walk down the path to Wagenschwend. Cross the road "Zum Feldkreuz" to reach the "Hauptstraße".
(E) Turn left here, pass the "Grüner Baum" bus stop and walk to the church, which is the destination of this stage.
