Nibelungensteig (8): Preunschen – Amorbach

The Nibelungensteig is a certified Qualitätsweg "Wanderbares Deutschland" (Quality Trail "Hikeable Germany") that runs for 130 km in several stages, some of which are very strenuous, with a total of more than 4,000 metres of elevation gain from west to east across the Odenwald and thus through three federal states (Hesse, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg). Our division differs from the official stages. We have chosen some shorter tours, added a few extra metres and stayed overnight in different places in some cases. When planning your tour, please note that accommodation, refreshment and catering facilities are not always available.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: In 10 stages on the Nibelungensteig

Description of the walk

:S:: Our stage starts in the centre of Preunschen at a beautiful bench in a roundabout.
We follow the Bergstraße to the right, keep left at the next fork, walk down the Dorfstraße, which turns left at the end of the village. Here we follow the signs for Wildenburg along the Dorfstraße to the left.

(1) On the right, we pass the oldest preserved farmhouse in the Bavarian Odenwald, which is actually the Forest Museum (Watterbacher Haus). Our path first leads along the fields and, after a bench, into the forest.

(2) Follow the signpost to Beuchen, i.e. straight ahead downhill. Pass a stone wall on your left and then walk down the winding path to Wildenburg.

(3) Our path leads past the castle on the right, but it is worth visiting the castle. We then walk in a large arc around the ruins until we reach a forest path again. Here we turn sharply right, with a completely cleared area in front of us. As soon as we reach a paved road, we follow it downhill to the left.

(4) Immediately after the playground, we follow the unpaved path to the right, downhill along a stream, until we reach a private road, which we follow downstream and cross a property – the Hofmühle (mill). Then we cross the stream and follow a paved path uphill. We reach the country road to Amorbach, which we follow to the right for about 200 metres, then turn left up a dirt forest road into the forest. Cross several forest paths, then continue steeply uphill on the so-called Eselsweg (donkey path) in the Diretissima. This is a sweaty and strenuous section of the trail. At the top, continue along the path until you reach a gravel road, which you follow to the left and then immediately turn right.

(5) Follow the paved forest road to the right along the edge of the forest, pass a small menhir with a bench and reach a road, where you continue straight ahead, past the Brandweiher pond. According to the internet, the inn is currently closed. We reach the road to Amorbach and follow it to the right – i.e. not towards Amorbach but towards the village of Beuchen. We walk through Beuchen, past several wayside shrines.

(6) Then comes a highlight, the Nibelungensteig leisure hut. Hikers can take a break here (see below). After a well-deserved rest, continue through Beuchen, turn right at the next crossroads and left after a few metres.

(7) At the Bauer distillery, turn left onto a dirt road (Höhbergweg) and leave Beuchen behind you. At the next fork, keep straight ahead. At the edge of the forest, you will reach another fork with a difficult route. We follow the right-hand path into the forest. As soon as we reach a forest road, we follow it to the left uphill, cross a stream and shortly afterwards turn right onto an inconspicuous path through a beech forest. We cross a forest road several times and keep to the narrow path downhill.

(8) We reach a hut with a bench, follow the forest road to the left, pass two benches and a waterfall. After a few metres, we take a narrow path downhill to the right. The path winds its way down into the valley, with natural stone walls and child-friendly information boards about wolves on our left. We reach a wide stream, the Morre, and follow the course of the stream. At a bridge, we stay on the left side of the stream and do not cross it.

(9) At the Gesundheitsbrünnele, we leave the stream and the path climbs slightly to the left. Ahead of us, we see the first houses of Schneeberg. We continue on a beautiful path along natural gardens with a view of Schneeberg. Finally, we see Amorbach ahead of us and, if you look closely, you can already see the Gotthardsbasilka on the opposite side of the hill, which we will visit in stage 9.

(10) We reach the paved road to Amorbach. If you want to stay overnight in Amorbach or are looking for the quickest way to the train station, leave the Nibelungensteig here and turn left, as we do. We follow the main road, leave the main road at the first possible junction and continue on Schneeberger Straße (11). If you want to go into the town, continue straight ahead. To get to the train station, turn right at the next intersection, then take a footpath on the left across the meadow, through the underpass and then a few metres to the left until you reach the train station (E).

Notes

There is a hiking pass for the Nibelungensteig, in which you can document your stages and then submit it. This qualifies you for the Nibelungensteig hiking pin.

Trail markings: The trail is marked throughout with a red N, and the access trail with a green N.

Trails: Partly easy forest trails, partly unpaved forest paths, not to be underestimated in terms of fitness. Most of the trails are used by mountain bikers and hikers at the same time.
