From Hetzbach via the Marbach Reservoir to the beautiful view at Etzean

The walk starts in Hetzbach and leads to the nearby Marbach Reservoir. Swimming enthusiasts should pack their swimwear in summer. The route takes you almost directly to the bathing spot by the lake. From the Marbach Reservoir, the path leads through the woods, up to one of the Odenwald’s characteristic open hilltops.

At the turning point, a lovely rest area with a view and a ‘bird box’ awaits the walkers. The return route takes you through the fields back to the starting point in Hetzbach.

Description of the walk

The hike starts at Oberzent-Hetzbach railway station. Oberzent-Hetzbach railway station is served alternately by bus route 50 – from Michelstadt station to Eberbach station – or by train VIA25174, from Groß-Umstadt Wiebelsbach to Eberbach station.

There are also a few parking spaces available right by the station.

(S/E) From the station, we turn right along Bahnhofstraße and, after a short while, leave the village of Hetzbach. We have to continue walking on the road for a few hundred metres.

(1) On the right-hand side is the access road to the car park at the Himbächel Viaduct. Shortly afterwards, we reach the B45. Here, we turn right and continue along the footpath and cycle path.

(2) At the end of the footpath and cycle path, we cross Federal Road 45 to the left, onto the forest track leading into the woods. We stay on this path until we reach the dam wall of the Marbach Reservoir.

(3) Just behind the dam, a narrow path leads down to the reservoir on the right. We follow this path along the lake to the jetty in the lake.

(4) At the jetty, we now turn left and continue along the forest track, leaving the Marbach reservoir behind us. The forest track now climbs slowly and steadily.

(5) Once we reach the edge of the forest, we continue to the left until the next fork in the path.

(6) At this fork, we turn right. At the top of the hill there is a lovely rest area with a view over the valley and a ‘bird box’.

(7) From the rest area, we head back to the fork in the path.

(6) From there, we continue to the right, following the tarmac path through the fields down the hill.

(8) We now reach Hetzbach. On the right-hand side are the premises of Kreutner Massivbau. Immediately after the premises, we turn right and walk down the road called Am Hang.

(9) At the main road, we turn left and continue towards Hetzbach.

(10) At the next street, Zum Krähenberg, we turn right again and head uphill.

(11) After about 100 metres, we turn left again, into Bahnhofstraße.

(S/E) We follow Bahnhofstraße until we reach our starting point, Hetzbach railway station.

Worth a visit

The Marbach Reservoir serves as a flood control reservoir and is open for swimming, boating and fishing.

The "Zwitscherkasten" – A schnapps with your snack or for a better view? The locals have catered to this wish too with a "Zwitscherkasten" at this lovely rest stop. A small box containing various bottles of spirits and a tin with a slot for your contribution – that’s all it takes for a hiking highlight.
