The starting point of the tour is Amorbach railway station.
(S) At Amorbach railway station, take the footpath to the right of the B47, i.e. turn left from the station and follow the B47.
(1) At the roundabout, turn left into the town; the Nibelungensteig trail goes to the right – the signpost can be found here – cross the railway tracks at the level crossing and walk along Weilbacher Straße, cross the Billbach stream, then continue almost straight ahead on Gotthardsweg up the hill. The trail leads through an older residential area.
(2) At the last house, the path enters the forest; keep left at the fork. The trail passes through terraced grounds, whose sandstone walls have partially collapsed and where nature has reclaimed its space. This was once the garden of the Leininger princely family's palace, which is located below but not visible from the trail. At the end of the terraced grounds, the trail climbs steeply and winds its way up to the Gotthardsberg.
(3) You will reach the Gotthardsbasilika, where you should definitely climb the bell tower. From here, you have a beautiful view back to Amorbach, the castle and the abbey. There are plenty of benches in front of and behind the ruins for a first break. The path leads slightly downhill into the forest in front of the basilica. Continue straight ahead.
(4) At the Sattelhütte, keep left and continue on a relatively flat gravel forest path.
(5) Now the trail descends slightly to the hamlet of Reuenthal.
(6) Continue for a short distance on the paved road, turn right after the bridge over the Weilbach, pass the former mill on your right and leave the village on Reuenthaler Straße, which turns into a gravel forest path at the end of the village. At the first fork, keep right and then left. The path climbs moderately at first, then increasingly steeply, ending just before Monbrunn. This section is very strenuous.
(7) At the entrance to Monbach, you can buy honey and pot holders. Walk along the paved road through the village, past the Jägerruh inn, which would be a good place for a lunch break, but is only open on a few weekends.
(8) At the bus stop, leave the village road and continue straight ahead. Behind the bus stop, hidden by bushes, is a small rest area with a long tree trunk at the side of the path, where larger groups of hikers can stop for lunch. The trail passes an Agrofrost project with free-range chickens and then leads back into the forest. Keep to the right.
(9) At a large stone, turn left onto a narrow path into the forest, where there is another place to rest. At the crossroads, turn right and then immediately left.
(10) After crossing the former ring wall, keep right, the path becomes narrower and the descent begins. The narrow path descends quite steeply until you reach the forest road, which you follow to the right. At the next crossroads, turn sharp left off the main path and continue downhill on a moderate slope.
(11) In a hairpin bend to the right, continue downhill on a wider forest road. After about 1 km at the fork in the road, keep left.
(12) Turn left at the next opportunity, making sure not to miss the signpost. Turn off the main path, past the Miltenberg rock formations and a suspension bridge, and follow the barefoot path (two yellow feet) further downhill, ignoring the signs for the Nibelungensteig.
(13) At the end of the barefoot path, you will come across the red N sign again. Go down the stairs, along the city wall through the Schnatterloch and into Miltenberg.
(E) The stage ends at the historic market square. There are many places to stay in Miltenberg, see https://miltenberg.info/
If you want to go to the train station, walk along Schulstraße, cross Mainstraße and continue straight ahead past the public toilets to the banks of the Main. There, turn right onto Nibelungensteig and continue to the first bridge over the Main, then straight ahead to Berliner Platz. Here you will find Miltenberg train station.
