Part of this hike follows the Chemin des Bisses trail. On maps, particularly OpenStreetMap, it is marked as "Chemin des Bisses N°58" or "Col des Planches Vercorin". At each major junction, you will find signposts with the number 58 on a green background. View this image
For this very long stage in hot weather, the locals recommend avoiding Saint Martin and Mase on the way back to Vernamiège. Follow the "Chemin des Bisses No. 58" to La Luette (at around km 14). An alternative route is to reach Vernamiège via Ossona, Gréferic, Sevanne and Les Prixes. (These paths are more shaded and less steep.)
(S) From the Hotel Magrappé, walk down towards the road for about 50 metres.
(1) Cross the road. The Bisses N°58 trail resumes here. Follow the Vex bisse, cross a road at Mayens de Sion. Continue until you cross a road coming from Vex.
(2) Follow this road south-east for about 700m until you reach a hairpin bend.
(3) In the bend, take the small road heading south, turn left at the first crossroads, then arrive at another crossroads with a path (signposted No. 58).
(4) Take the path on the left, then after about 150m, look out for a small path branching off to the left. A small sign indicates "Hérémence". Do not miss this landmark as the main path is a dead end.
(5) Descend to the main street of Hérémence; the path widens as you approach the village.
(6) Cross the main street and look for the signposts a few metres further north.
(7) Follow the signs for "Chemin des Bisses N°58" in Hérémence. Go down a short flight of steps and follow the signs.
(8) Head south and find "Chemin des Bisses N°58". The path, often in the woods, descends for about 4.5 km into the Dixence valley. Cross the Dixence and, after the bridge, begin the fairly steep climb up two hairpin bends until you reach a road.
(9) Cross the road and continue on the "Chemin des Bisses N°58" (signpost) until you reach another intersection with a road.
(10) Descend a few hairpin bends to return to the Euseigne road, then after about 200m you will see another signpost No. 58.
(11) At the sign, take the path on the left and head straight to the centre of the village of Euseigne.
(12) Walk through the village in a south-easterly direction until you reach a three-way junction.
(13) At the crossroads, turn right onto a path climbing up to a signpost for "Chemin des Bisses N°58". Walk above the road and rejoin it a good kilometre further on.
(14) Continue along the road until you reach the entrance to the hamlet of La Luette. Cross the road at the three barn-style chalets (signposted "Losange Jaune" and "Bike" on the middle chalet).
(15) The path quickly disappears behind the road railings. Descend to the stream, cross the bridge over the "Borgne" and climb back up to the intersection of path No. 58 and a "Bike" track towards Ossona.
(16) Leave path No. 58 here, which normally passes through Saint Martin. Heading north-east, stay on the Ossona trail, also known as "Valais Alpine Bike No. 43". Pass the hamlet of Tsampé (a few houses) and you will reach an intersection.
(17) Leave the "Valais Alpine Bike No. 43" on your right and take the Ossona trail heading north-northwest (signposted Passerelle d'Ossona). Continue to the footbridge.
(18) Cross the impressive 130-metre-long suspension bridge over steep terrain 30 metres above the ground. Continue to a crossroads.
(19) At the fork, leave the path to Ossona on your left and continue north. After about 300 metres, look for the sign for Sévanne.
(20) At the sign, change direction, heading east to cross the Manna torrent. Then head north-west, pass the few chalets of Sévanne, then head north to reach a crossroads at the foot of the hamlet of Les Prixes.
(21) At the crossroads, follow the signs for Les Prixes, cross a long meadow and you will come to the road to Vernamiège at Les Prixes.
(22) Cross the Vernamiège road, take the path opposite in the bend, and climb up to the entrance to the village (route du Fond Ville).
(23) Take a path between the chalets to reach the main road and the church, then your evening accommodation: La cure de Vernamiège (E).
