La Tzoumaz - Nendaz

The elevation profile says it all about this day. Most of the route runs along the Grand Bisse de Saxon. This section has been beautifully restored. In Taillay, you will discover a water wheel and a hammer powered by the stream. This ingenious invention was an alarm signal. The sound of the hammer could be heard 2 km away. The absence of sound alerted the bisse guard. You will recognise the Muverans massif on the other side of the Rhône valley.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: From Col des Planches to Grimentz via the bisses trail

Description of the walk

The route of this hike follows the Chemin des Bisses for the most part. On maps, particularly OpenStreetMap, it is marked as “Chemin des Bisses No. 58” or “Col des Planches Vercorin”. At every major junction, you will find signposts bearing the No. 58 symbol on a green background. View this symbol

(S) From the centre of La Tzoumaz (Hôtel de la Poste), head to the cable car station.

(1) Passing beneath the cable car departure point, take the path which initially runs alongside the cable car track before turning westwards to rejoin a track.

(2) At the signpost, follow the track southwards to rejoin the Saxon bisse path you left the day before. (Signpost No. 58).

(3) Follow the bisse along a gentle uphill slope of around 3%. You’ll reach a picnic area at Taillay with a waterwheel and a hammer driven by the water from the bisse.

(4) Continue, always following the signs for path No. 58. The path climbs northwards, passing beneath the summit of Le Fou (2,610 m) and then beneath the Dent de Nendaz (2,463 m)

(5) Trail no. 58 finally crosses a track above Isérable. Leave this track on your right and continue along the bisse (the trail branches off to the right, climbing slightly). Continue for a further 300m along the old Saxon bisse until you reach a junction.

(6) Leave the Saxon bisse; path no. 58 turns left and is still named “Col des Planches Vercorin”. Descend for about a hundred metres, then path no. 58 joins a new track.

(7) Begin the descent towards Nendaz, pass a dried-up pond, and continue until you reach the Route de Pracondu.

(8) Cross this road and continue north-east on trail no. 58 “Col des Planches Vercorin” to the entrance to Nendaz (Route de la Péroua).

(9) On this road heading east, make your way towards the cable car station.

(10) At the cable car station, turn right to reach your accommodation for the night: Hôtel Les Étagnes (E).

We did this hike after the first one from Col des Planches to La Tsoumaz. It is much easier than the first section. We met very few people, but it's not impossible that it's busier in high season, as some of the sites are easily accessible from Nendaz.
Thanks for the description of the route.
