Circular route around Montagne de Chevran

A forest hike around Montagne de Chevran. At the summit, there is a beautiful viewpoint, and on the way back you’ll pass through the stunning Chevran mountain pastures. Please note that the climb is short but steep.

Description of the walk

Park in the roadside car park (picnic table and “Green Cross” sign).
(S/E) Take the small path on the right that runs alongside the road (do not take the path going uphill to the left as this is the return route). The path passes through L’Englenaz (follow signs for La Corbassière) then through La Corbassière (follow signs for Pont de la Motte).

(1) At Pont de la Motte, follow the signs for La Perrière along the forest track.

(2) At La Perrière (the lowest point of the hike), head towards The Green Cross via Le May and start the climb by following the track on your left. After a few minutes, you’ll reach the Fontaine aux Oiseaux and then the Pied de Bœuf sign. The ascent really begins at the Le Plon sign (you must continue to follow the signs for the Green Cross). Take a path that winds its way up (sometimes steeply) to the viewpoint. On the way, you’ll pass the May ruins.

(3) Leave the main path and head straight along a secondary path that cuts through a pine forest to the viewpoint (note: no signposting).

(4) Enjoy the view (with the town of Cluses below) then head back down the main path to the Chevran mountain pastures.

(5) At the sign for Alpage de Chevran, head towards the Green Cross and descend along the path that runs through the meadows (the landscape changes after the forest). Cross the Chevran d’en Haut and then the Chevran d’en Bas.

(6) The track ends. Now take a tarmac road which leads back to the car park in a few minutes (S/E).

Standard hiking kit. I strongly recommend the hiking map of the walking routes in Flaine and Les Carroz (available from the Les Carroz and Flaine Tourist Offices).

Alternative route: (3) At the junction, continue the hike to (5) and head for the viewpoint by following the signs for Pointe de Chevran.

We went for a walk with our children (aged 7, 9 and 11) and it really is a tough one because of all the uphill sections.
We wanted to do it in the opposite direction to end up at the waterfall mentioned in a review, but we never found it!!
I would therefore recommend doing it in the direction given.
The walk is very shaded but not always well signposted. The route on the app helped us a lot and sometimes prevented us from getting lost.
Between points 3 and 4, there are no markings in a forest ravaged by a storm. The path is more guessed at than seen, so we made our way using our phones to guide us.
Magnificent view of Cluses at point 4, and the Chevran mountain pasture is very pretty with lots of flowers.

Hello everyone, and thank you for sharing this walk.
I did it in August, going in the opposite direction. Well shaded, full of seasonal fruit, varied scenery; you can extend it a bit if you need to.
Be careful between points 3 and 4 (4 to 3 for me); the forest was ravaged and I couldn’t find my way, so I ended up heading to point 5.
There’s a large waterfall near point 2 that’s well worth a detour. You need to take the path running parallel below to spot the signs (a wooden sign and pink spray-painted markings). The descent to the waterfall is very, very steep and should be avoided at all costs in wet weather. Once at the waterfall, you can swim there or view it from above; it was about ten metres high. It’s worth the detour – an extra 15 minutes – if you’re not put off by very steep paths.

A lovely little walk that introduced me to the beautiful Chevran mountain pasture. These days, the route is very well maintained and clearly signposted. There are benches all along the way. We set off from the cemetery in Cluses.

A straightforward hike; the paths are poorly maintained, so there’s no signposting for the variants
Best to avoid the brambles – I missed the final climb to the Pointe de Chevran

A very difficult path due to the forest still being badly damaged by the last storm.
The path is blocked in many places by uprooted trees and no longer follows the original route.
It is best to be familiar with the area before attempting this hike.
