From Romme to Les Chalets de Vormy

A very beautiful walk in the hills above Cluses. You climb, then descend, at a steady pace along a good forest track. You don’t really notice the elevation gain.

Description of the walk

The walk starts from the village of Romme-sur-Cluses. When you arrive from Cluses via Nancy-sur-Cluses, you pass through the village. You’ll come to a T-junction; park in the car park on the left.

(S/E) You start the hike by heading south, towards Le Reposoir.

(1) Very soon, you’ll see the sign for “Romme – alt. 1300 m”. Leave the Route du Reposoir and head up to the left.

(2) You’ll come to a hairpin bend on the left. You’ll see the sign for “Le Creux de Sable – alt. 1360 m”. You’ll climb up, passing through a barrier intended to prevent cars from entering (a rather lax restriction...).
From here on, there’s no risk of going wrong. It’s “straight ahead”, meaning you follow the wide forest track leading to the Chalets de Vormy.

Landmarks along the way include:

(3) The sign for “Les Laus – alt. 1590 m”.

(4) The Chalet des Vuardes with its picnic table.

(5) The sign “Porzet – alt. 1800 m”.

(6) The Chalets de Vormy.

Return downhill via the same route taken on the ascent to get back to Romme (S/E).

Notes

The village of Romme is situated 10 km from Cluses via the Nancy road. From Romme, you can also head down to the village of Le Reposoir.

This hike is only feasible in summer, after the snow has melted, or in autumn before the snow falls. It can, however, be attempted on snowshoes in winter, but you must be extremely careful towards the end of the route, when you reach the peaks.

Warning! Towards the end of the route, you will go round the head of the Sallaz. This takes you along the edge of a very high precipice.
- Keep an eye on children to ensure they stay on the track.
- Although there is no particular danger (the path is about 3 m wide), the bypass may pose a problem for those who are very prone to vertigo.

There are two other routes for this walk. We have chosen the route that is technically the easiest, but... the longest in terms of distance.

There are no shops in Romme. A mobile grocery van serves the village (though you do need to be there when it passes...). However, there is a bar/restaurant.

Worth a visit

You’ll enjoy magnificent views over the Cluses valley, the village of Romme, and the surrounding peaks.

Hello,
A lovely hike. With sunshine. Magnificent views.
The snow was good. In the morning there was a thin crust on top, but underneath the snow was powdery.
In the afternoon, the snow became a bit sticky.

The path is a bit monotonous, but the view at the end is superb.

We came across 7 or 8 hikers at the end of October, which leads us to believe that the hike is quite popular.

The first part of the route is long and shaded, which is a real bonus in hot weather, before reaching the flower-filled mountain pasture. Magnificent views.
A lovely, quiet hike with no difficulty. We highly recommend it.

A magnificent, fairly long hike. The ascent, along a track suitable for 4x4s, is very steady and never particularly steep. Stunning views of the Mont Blanc massif and the Chablais region. Goat’s and sheep’s cheese on arrival – delicious!

A lovely snowshoe hike with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The route is well signposted. There are other routes available starting from Romme or Les Chalets.
