Park in the car park by the roadside, accessible via the D106 from Magland via Arâches la Frasse and Les Carroz d'Arâches in the Grand Massif resort. Follow the road for a few kilometres after Les Carroz d'Arâches. Pass the Carroz 1500 resort (Les Molliets) and, after a few hairpin bends, the car park is on the left-hand side of the road in a sharp bend.
Preliminary note: this hike is only marked with directional and distance signs; there are no specific markings. The trails and paths are easy to spot and follow.
(S/E) From the car park, take the small, fairly steep path towards Lac de l'Airon.
(1) Turn right at the crossroads towards Lac de Vernant.
(2) Continue straight ahead at the crossroads towards Lac de Vernant. Keep going in this direction at each intersection until you reach a stony path.
(3) Continue left, still towards Lac de Vernant. On the right along the path, note the pretty Chalet de Vernant before arriving at the lake: view of the lake and the valley below. Return to the stony path above the Corbalanche chairlift departure station.
(4) Turn right and climb towards the Col de Vernant: distant views of the Cirque du Fer à Cheval to the north-east, the Grands Vans and the Pointe de Véret to the south-east and south.
(5) At the Col de Vernant, take the stony path on the left towards the Tête du Pré des Saix and continue to the summit, at the Chariande Express chairlift arrival station: magnificent view of Mont Blanc and its massif to the south-southeast and a 360° view of the landscapes and villages of the Grand Massif area.
(6) Descend slightly towards the Coulouvrier chairlift arrival station. Follow the stony path on the right and pass under the chairlift, below the station. Continue along the path along the ridge, passing under the Molliets chairlift arrival station. Arrive at Col de l'Airon.
(7) Take the track on the left at the pass, just before you reach the Gron chairlift arrival station. Follow the path to the Chalet de l'Airon and its lake. Walk along the lake to the small footbridge over the spillway.
(8) Turn right onto the path that descends and joins the path coming from the car park at the crossroads.
(1) Follow the route in reverse to return to the car park (S/E).
