Description of the walk

Start from the Place du Champ de Foire, at the foot of the sign showing the walking routes, on the corner of Rue du Petit Pont and the cemetery. Car parks and motorhome parking area 80 m away.

Follow the signposting in place – Regard sur la Forterre No. 22

(S) Walk up Rue du Petit Pont towards the village centre. When you reach the church, turn right and then right again at the next junction onto Rue des Canards. Then turn left and, at the Pont des Canards, cross the Vrille stream. After passing the first two paths on the right, you’ll reach a Y-junction.

(1) Turn right. Shortly afterwards, ignore the path on the left and head down into the valley. At the bottom of this descent, you’ll come to a first path on the left; ignore it. Then, after about twenty metres, a path branches off to the right; ignore this and continue straight on. After a short climb comes the descent leading to the impluvium wash house.

(2) Carry straight on and, via a somewhat steep climb, you’ll come out onto a cross-country track.

Leave the signposted route – View of La Forterre No. 22

(3) Cross this road by turning right then left to take the street (signposted for the lodge). After about a hundred metres, the church tower will come into view on your left. When you reach a cross at the junction of the street and the path, take the street on the left (Rue de la Chaume). Cross the fairground, also known as La Chaume de Perreuse. Continue on to reach the Grande Rue. Turn left and you’ll come to a lime tree.

(4) Head to the right of the lime tree and turn right again onto the next path. At the cross, go straight on. At the crossroads, turn left and you’ll come out onto a tarmac road.

(5) Head up to the right along this road, pass the foot of the orientation table and, at the exit of the S-bend in the road, turn left towards the relay masts. Pass the foot of this military building, then, leaving the path leading to the farm on your left, continue straight on along the one leading to the D 7.

(6) Cross with care and continue along the path. Another mast will serve as a landmark. After passing it on your right, continue straight on. Leave the farm on your right and you’ll come to a tarmac road. Head up to the left then turn right at the next junction.

(7) Stay on this road, which passes through the hamlet of Montreparé and descends to that of Chappe.

(8) Continue for about twenty metres, then turn right onto a tarmac road. At the next junction, flanked by a cross on the central reservation, go straight on. At the end, reach a crossroad; turn left to join the D 6.

(9) Follow this road uphill, without crossing it, towards the village houses. Pass the junction leading to the centre and, at the Fork in the road, head right, passing the Fontaines Saint-Martin. Pass La Montagne, then Vaurimbert, and head downhill to rejoin the D6. At the Stop sign, go straight on, keeping to the right-hand verge.

(10) Cross the road carefully and take the path. At the next junction, turn right. Cut across the small road to rejoin the access road to Champ Martin Bas. Before the first houses, take the path on the left. Continue straight on and, when you reach a small wood, turn left and carry on until you find a path crossing in front of the wood (ignore the path leading into the copse; the IGN map is not up to date in this area). Turn left to reach a road.

(11) First turn right then left to rejoin a tarmac road. Leave it at the next junction and head right onto a hard-packed track. Continue straight on, ignoring any side paths. You’ll come out onto the road; take it to the left.

(12) Cross the road and head down the dirt track opposite. At the first Fork in the road, turn left and at the following Forks in the road, continue straight on.

(13) Pass through the hamlet of Vellery and, at the pond, turn right, then left at the next junction. At the crossroads, turn right.

(14) Take the path on the left marked Chemin du Puits No. 29. Follow it until you reach the road. Leave the No. 29 signposting to join route No. 28, known as La Vallée des Ânes. Take the main road, crossing the D 125, and pass through La Poterie.

(15) Follow the road and, turning right twice, you will come to a grassy path; take this path.

Leave the marked La Vallée des Ânes No. 28 route

(16) Carry straight on, cross a road and follow an almost straight path across the plain, ending in a 90° bend. You will come out onto a road.

(17) Cross over and head down the stony path opposite. At the bottom of the valley, there is sometimes a pool of standing water. Head up the valley to reach a junction downstream of the viaduct track. Continue uphill to the left, parallel to the track.

(18) Cross the old railway line and take the path, keeping the castle on your right in sight. Continue on, then turn and head down a path lined with hedges. You will arrive at the wooded park of Les Sources de la Druyes (E).

Notes

Take care with the various signposted paths you follow or cross on this route.
(8) On the left, a sign points to the Pisserotte spring and wash house: a lovely spot for a picnic.
(12) On the left, about a hundred metres away, a viewpoint over the Puisaye (a green, wooded area), the Forterre (more barren) and the Morvan on the horizon.
Between (17) and (18), in the background, the Panama Valley collects its excess water. In the event of heavy rainfall, it can sometimes be very difficult to pass through. In this case, either go through the woods on the left or head back up to the road and make your way to Druyes.
Stopover lodges in Treigny and Perreuse, as well as standard lodges. Information available fromthe Puisaye-Forterre Tourist Office.
